Most pharma or biotech have access to cryo-EM one way or another. But there is still a lot of room for new drug discovery paradigms based on cryo-EM and VCs know that. Could your research be the next Septerna, Gandeeva or MOMA? I write about it here endpts.com/sp/the-dawn-of…
Could be a handy tool for facility managers to communicate with people who are new to micrographs.
Presenting VirtualIce: Generate half-synthetic cryoEM micrographs; helps researchers visualize new proteins & diagnose issues (eg. preferred orientation, aggregation) and provides developers with ground-truths for ML dev (eg. picking, heterogeneity). biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh…

100,000's of our #cryoEM Autogrid Rings have been used since 2023 without issue. They're inspected w/multiple processes, including a visual inspection of every ring by experts. Our passion to make the best rings is evident in quality&package!See them #MM2024 @MiTeGen @TedPellaInc
This is actually democratising cryoEM! Brilliant work by @HariVenugopal2 @CryoEM_Monash @GeorgRamm Sub 3 angstrom on a 120 kV technai with a LaB6 source! Read it! It's a masterpiece biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Negative stain image from my PhD (long time ago). Same protein superfamily as the one referred to in the position below.
Exciting news! We will soon have a 3-year postdoc position open to work on structure-guided design of proteins and peptides to modulate the human immune system. Drop me a message if you’re interested in this project! #postdoc #cryoEM #immunology #hiring
Advantage cloud for cryo-EM: Put the data center where electricity is abundant, cheap and clean.
AMAZON FINALLY GOES NUCLEAR Amazon just bought a massive data center under construction right at one of America's best nuclear plants. Operating costs for the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Pennsylvania are crazy low - likely around $25 per MWh. Why is this a huge nuclear…
Useful to distinguish at least four general choices: 1. Local IT 2. DYI shadow IT (necessary evil given #1) 3. Cloud equivalent of #1 4. Fully managed cloud services by specialized providers (e.g. Clovertex)
Beautiful! It is great to see ppl still building and proud of their own workstations instead of going cloud (or to local IT services which never understand the codes/jobs the WS will run). Reminds of my early #compchem days! :-)
Who will pollute more? AGI or cryo-EM?
The costs of intelligence and energy are going to be on a path towards near-zero. We certainly won’t get all the way there this decade, but by 2030, it will become clear that the AI revolution and renewable+nuclear energy are going to get us there.
Highly recommend checking out the many little innovations that make sample prep life better and cheaper.
I wrote a stupidly long blog post about cryo-EM in the cloud. Aimed at industry. But includes thoughts about the tendency of institutes to underinvest in IT and opportunities for facility managers: cryoduck.com/blog/caseforcl…
Good and important burn. A lot of holes in the tomo story. #callingbs
Sorry but I couldn’t restrain myself from making this 😅 (just for laughs, no offense intended) #cryoET
Not intuitive but manual plungers are very good for reproducibility. #RobertsInsteadOfRobots
1) Remove the silly acrylic box 2) move to a cold room and bring a humidifier (or hang some wet towels) 3) blot from the front and reproducibly get great vitreous ice (with a bit of practice), as shown by Mark Herzik below. See also herziklab.com/manual-plunge.…
Make this your top priority in life!
Please RT - An opportunity to spend two months next summer in Japan and experience its culture and research environment. Please check out JSPS' summer program below. We will be more than happy to host you in our lab. 🗾🗻🏯🍙👺❄️🔬🙂👍
Can't wait to see a flood of use cases
Now on @biorxivpreprint: @kimanius paper on #Blush regularisation, a machine-learning based prior in #RELION5 trained on @EMDB_EMPIAR entries, which he uses to solve a #cryoEM data set of a 40 kDa protein:RNA complex that was previously intractable! 🤯 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

One of the many good reasons to go to the cloud for cryo-EM computing. It won't necessarily save the world. But university policies will eventually catch up with corporate policies and you'll need to be ready for that.
This is in line with my calculations yesterday. Running a 4 GPU workstation at 100% for a year equates to approximately one return flight from London to San Francisco. (Also: the flight emits the CO2 high in the atmosphere and the flight cannot run on renewable energy.)
A helicopter emits half a ton of CO2 per hour of flight time, which is similar to the carbon intensity of 1000 kWhs. How many scenic flights do your cryo-EM structures equate to?
The news is just too depressing lately. Might just uninstall all news apps, including this new X thing for a while. Tell me when it is better. theguardian.com/environment/20…
