Hooray! Yet another set of twins (both female) have been born in Samburu National Reserve almost two years after Bora from the Winds gave birth to twins for the first time in decades. Meet Alto’s double joy who were first spotted by our researchers this week. 🎥 Gilbert Sabinga
Jaci visits the remains of Monsoon - an elephant matriarch who died last year during the drought. Research, by San Diego Zoo Global and Save the Elephants, has shown that elephants display various patterns of behaviour towards their dead as seen in this footage by David Daballen.
Bull elephant, Sarara, enjoys a quick bath in the freshly flowing Ewaso Nyiro river after rains fell upstream. Earlier this week, Samburu National Reserve received a small amount of rain so fingers and trunks crossed for more showers in the coming days! 🌧️🌧️🌧️ 🎥 Paul Kokiro

The miracle twins born in January this year continue to defy all odds! Last seen in March, the duo was recently spotted again - ALIVE and WELL - in Samburu by Shivani Bhalla from @EwasoLions . Elephant twins rarely survive in the wild so we are delighted by this news.

When it gets hot, elephants seek shade. But what happens when your entire family, like the Clouds here, decide to squeeze under the same Acacia tree? Fortunately, elephants can keep cool by flapping their ears which act as a fan. 🎥 Jack Ward/STE
Did you know that entire ecosystems could collapse if elephants were wiped out? As landscape engineers and architects, this keystone species provides water, food and habitat for other animals, and plays a crucial role in supporting both human and animal life. 📷 Robbie Labanowski
An elephant’s trunk is a biological wonder. This versatile appendage, made entirely of muscle, can be used in a variety of ways from collecting water and uprooting trees, to grabbing some tasty doum palm nuts as seen in this picture by @robbielab /Save the Elephants.
Sarara is back on his feet and was recently spotted hanging out at our research centre in Samburu. Last year, Sarara was found with a spear in his stomach in a suspected human-elephant conflict incident but was thankfully treated and seems to have fully recovered from his wound.
Several big bulls like Google (pictured) have made surprise visits to Samburu National Park in the last month, possibly enticed by the green foliage that has sprung up after the recent rains. We hope this means an abundance of bouncing baby eles in the park in 22 months time!
The next couple of weeks will be crucial for Samburu’s new elephant twins though STE’s Founder and President, Dr Iain Douglas-Hamilton, remains “cautiously hopeful” of their survival. Read more: bit.ly/3KyMJtC 📷 Jane Wynyard/Save the Elephants
Congratulations to Bora from the Winds on giving birth to TWO elephant calves (male and female) this past weekend. Twin births like this are rare - in fact we haven’t seen twins in the park for decades! Photos by Jane Wynyard and Bernard Lesirin

Today, after a four year rollout, we celebrate the complete closure of one of the world’s largest ivory markets: Hong Kong. From tomorrow the ban will demonstrate Hong Kong’s commitment to elephants and conservation as a whole. 📷 Frank af Petersens/Save the Elephants
Fancy some poop 💩? Well, Celia from the Shakespeare Ladies does! WATCH (unless you’re squeamish) as she enjoys fresh dung deposited by another member of the family. Elephant poop is a source of digestive gut bacteria, especially for young calves. Footage: David Lolchuragi/STE
Sending warm seasons greetings from our herd to yours! Have a happy and healthy holiday season 🎄 Photo: Nic Nichols/Save the Elephants
