This lovely concept turns a world of 'triggers' on it's head. Just as we can identify 'triggers' and support children to identify and manage them to reduce stress and disregulation so we can help them spot 'glimmers' and seek them out to increase well being.

For adults who are dealing with immensely challenging behaviour from children....

Think of those children who choose, seemingly inexplicably, the chaos of dysregulation. They are offered calm support and they refuse. This is why. The unknown is scary even if it's safer! Take tiny steps and persist consistently and calmly.

Song about being ND [ Thom has ADHD] We need more positivity around having ND wiring. We need ND people to say " I like being me" as it says in the song. The Lottery Winners - Superpower youtu.be/Dh8y1iodqrQ?fe… via @YouTube

Trauma doesn't always mean an event - it can be life stress reaching a 'toxic' level. This can be parental split, house move, parental police involvement/ prison, family illness /death -especiall involving hospital or mental illhealth, drink or drug use from close adult, poverty.

The hippocampus - the language and memory section - is also affected . The cheeky nervy bossy amygdala switches both those areas off so all that is doing the 'thinking' is the fight/ flight/ freeze/ giggle area which thinks something is trying to do harm. No listening possible!

I have yet to come across a child who has experienced trauma who isn't expressing themselves at an emotional age much different than their chronological age, "emotional arrested development." Higher parts of the brain are underdeveloped, lower overdeveloped / over sensitive.🧠🌱

Why being Trauma Informed and applying that knowledge in our practise is vital. To ourselves and to those CYP we have in our care. We need to be aware of our 'triggers' and able to manage them so we can help them deal with theirs.

So many adults pass on the rigidity of a fixed mindset just with how they behave but chidren can be taught to think of positives, to seek solutions, to be brave and resilient - to have a growth mindset.

Flip and flood... not a choice. Not 'naughty/ cheeky/ oppositional'. Difficult and challenging - yes sometimes. But see my previous post - backstory and context is the key. Know the needs, meet the needs.

The amygdala is crucial in the formation & storage of emotional memories, but plays special attention to threat, fear which is conditioned over time with prolonged ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences),toxic stress, adversity, threat, chaos and unpredictability.🧠🌱

Context is everything. If we do not take backstory into account we will fail those who need our understanding and care most. Know better, do better.

When toxic stress is prolonged then the 'trauma' experienced affects behaviour and social skills. When they use the 'wrong' response we should wonder why - not sanction them.

You can’t punish trauma out of a young person. It's only adding more pain and dosing up an already oversensitised stress response. Let's start by being trauma informed and responsive by asking, "What has happened to you?"🧠🌱

This is my top professional skill - over my career I have been this person for 1000's of children who are challenged and challenging. From the end of September you can have my support by getting in touch for a bespoke service.

We cannot know what something feels like for someone else. We elevate anxiety and decrease confidence when we enforce compliance based on our perceptions. They feel how they feel.
