Maslow's Hierarchy isn't just for children. We grow up still needing to belong, friendships, sense of accomplishment, praise, respect of others, etc. Leaders, make sure these needs of your staff are being met, or they will find somewhere to have them met.
If you've been brutally broken, but still have the courage to be gentle with other living beings... Then you're a badass, with the heart of an angel. 💛👼💛 ~Keanu Reeves~
When you sit with a griever, your work is to be with him where he is, not drag him out where you are more comfortable.
“Therapeutic change isn’t about therapy. It is INVARIABLY about relationship. There was this person. There was a teacher, a coach, a family member. It’s about feeling like you belong, feeling like you’re connected.” -@BDPerry #TheMeYouCantSee
Did you know that school counselors take the same college course work as licensed therapists? Schools, utilize your school counselor for what they are trained to do!
We like to talk about getting children to report, but we don’t like to talk about what happens when they do.
ABSOLUTELY! School counselors should be spending their time working directly with students - not spending the majority of their time in front of a computer, clicking boxes
I am a school counselor, but I am pretty sure I am a mental health professional because those classes in my masters program allowed me to be an LCPC. SCHOOL COUNSELORS ARE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS!
A8: sharing data with teachers. Helping teachers recognize MH concerns and then communication with the SC. Advertise small groups offered. Continue bulletin boards. Make MH part of our everyday language. #scchat
A7: I think a lot of it is due to a lack of understanding and a huge discomfort with the trauma that many of our students have experienced. Trauma that manifests in behaviors that cannot be “controlled” - this makes many people fearful. We must ask, “what happened to you?”#scchat
A6: be open, present, welcoming to all students. Talk about mental health regularly. Promote services in various way to all stakeholders. Appropriate self disclosure. Most importantly focus on building relationships with students. #scchat
A5: student, SC, community counselor, family, teachers, admin, medical doctor working together, communicating in order for the student to learn, thrive, grow in a safe space that values his/her humanity and health to contribute to a better society. #scchat
A4: SCs spending majority of time in direct service. Hiring SCs that have graduated from accreditedprograms. PD for SCs that is about providing Ss with counseling services. Allowing SCs to be proactive and intentional in services provided #scchat
A3: feeling seen/valued/understood; having equitable opportunities; having access to quality school/food/living/healthcare are all related to mental health and racism #scchat
A2: For me, the isolation and lack of connection with other humans on a consistent basis is the largest impact the pandemic has had on the mental health of my students. That and access-worse than before, most outside clinicians are still only virtual #scchat
