Ohio officials have now said there is nothing they can do about their state's recently uncovered Nazi homeschooler network. So, in OH you can graduate from HS having been taught actual racism. But you can't graduate having been taught ABOUT racism as a systemic force.
We need to normalize teachers being imperfect while still seeing them as competent, qualified, and excellent.
The move allows Two Locals to build up their #craftbeer tap list from two to 12 plus a #food menu that will include weekly specials inspired by the founders’ Liberian and Jamaican heritage. More from @phillyinsider via @PhillyInquirer: inquirer.com/food/two-local…
"Teacher shortage" is shorthand for "shortage of teachers willing to work under crappy conditions and/or for insufficient pay." More generally, as author Garret Keizer reminds us, "Our entire economic system rests on the principle of paying people less than their labor is worth."
Yesss! *manipulate*
Just now realizing how traditional PBIS is rooted in capitalism and now I can’t unsee it. Not us giving out tangibles like tokens and fake money to mold and manipulate students into behaviors we deem appropriate so they can later exchange it for a prize. LHM.
The difference between teacher-centered and student-centered language is pretty startling. Consider where the ownership of work lies. If you want students to be self-motivated, make sure you indicate that the work is theirs not yours. amazon.com/What-We-Say-Ho…

Apparently it's "political" to declare that Black lives matter but not political to act as if they don't. My new blog post: "Indoctrination" - alfiekohn.org/blogs/indoctri…
I’m sick to my stomach with the state of US education right now. This is exhausting, infuriating, saddening, and depressing.
...Instead we might ask something like “What questions do you have now that you didn’t have before you read (or heard) this?” That's more consistent with - and could even encourage - the possibility that *learning* might have taken place…
*Systematic change*, not 'self care', Go beyond checking in to build a culture of relational trust
To feel human in our workplace, we all need to feel like we have choices and teachers need to feel trusted and empowered to make those choices. @JYooBrannon @EdSurge edsurge.com/news/2021-09-3…
Compliance vs. development
Specific programs and techniques go in & and of style, but the central objective of classroom management is almost always to elicit compliance, not to promote kids' development. My essay in the current edition of Ed. Week: alfiekohn.org/article/bd25/
