The more time I spend working on climate, the more clear it is that huge amounts of mitigation work (and urgency) that would make hundreds of millions of lives better is being held back by a few hundred [mostly] old/white/men.

4⃣The reason we're not cutting fossil fuel use is not because it's really hard (it is) or represents huge challenges for finance (it does). It's because a tiny fraction of humanity is resisting with all of its considerable power. Power it has accrued with fossil fuels.

What a video😍So inspired by my fellow grads, postdocs, undergraduate tutors, and other academic workers across the UC system! We're all about to start the bargaining fight for housing justice and other working condition wins!

NEW: UC San Diego spiked rents up to 85% on graduate students who get paid poverty wages and can't afford to live. At the same time, UC chancellors each received $100K+ raises. The system is crushing grad students. Now ~50,000 of them, organized with @UAW, are fighting back.

Join us tomorrow! We're on Zoom, so anyone can come (you don't have to be in Santa Cruz!) @AFS_Students @CalNevaAFS @SacDavisAFS @WesternDivAFS

Journal Club! Join us for a casual chat as we discuss the paper "Does aquaculture add resilience to the global food system?" (Troell et al. 2014) Article: researchgate.net/publication/26… Zoom Link: ucsc.zoom.us/j/96908387461?… Meeting ID: 969 0838 7461 Passcode: 322621

More than a year of work. Hundreds of hours of organizing. THIS. IS. HUGE!! Gonna go celebrate real quick. And then start the work in bargaining for better working conditions!

BREAKING: UC agrees to recognize SRU-UAW in its entirety! This historic victory was brought about by the tireless efforts of thousands of SRs who organized to win a union & a direct response to our massive Strike Authorization Vote. Now let’s win a strong contract for all SRs!

As of last night, the UC has officially rejected the inclusion of fellows in our new union @sruuaw, saying that fellows don't share a "community of interest" with other student researchers and that they don't do the same work (?!?) Sign our petition: bit.ly/3gX6JZS

New paper out today, a comprehensive review (and paradigm shift) of giant sea bass population sizes, fishery trends, and resource divisions between the US and Mexico. This is paper was led by the incredible @arturorava bit.ly/3ypwAQN

A historic moment: Yesterday, we delivered 10,000 cards stating "yes, I support a union!" to the state of California's employee relations board, the first step in forming a union for gradaute student researchers. Next up: fighting to improve working conditions for UC grads!

There they are! SRs from all 10 UC campuses gather inside the PERB office with the cards.
