Got through the election & immediately started on my next project. See you all in February!
The closest U.S. Senate race in Michigan history, and the first time ever that an open U.S. Senate seat in this state went to the candidate whose party lost the presidential race in Michigan.
UPDATE: Democratic U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin by a razor-thin margin defeated her U.S. Senate opponent Mike Rogers, keeping an important seat her party's column as it already has lost the majority in the chamber to Republicans. bit.ly/3SGl6Vr
😐
CORRECTION: While Secretary Benson told reporters a margin of 0.5 percentage point would trigger an automatic recount, that is incorrect. Current law requires a margin of under 2,000 votes. Next year that will change to a margin of 0.1 percent or less.
Jason Morgan will also run for minority leader
BREAKING NEWS: Rep. Laurie Pohutsky announced today she will seek to lead the House Democratic Caucus as minority leader in the 2025-26 term following the House Republican victory in Tuesday's elections. @lpohutsky19 bit.ly/3VB1ouT
Final Detroit numbers are in. Turnout = 47% Total: 246,303 (down 4% and 10,211 from 2020) Harris: 221,629 (down 8% and 19,307 from Biden in 2020) Trump: 19,667 (up 53% and 6,778 from 2020) Democratic turnout was < 2016 by 13,242 votes Republican turnout was > by 13,648

Nothing here about if Tate will step down following the loss of majority. House Dems will determine leadership for the 2025-26 term tomorrow.
Michigan House Speaker Joe Tate, D-Detroit, officially concedes Republicans have regained control of the chamber in a statement: "Come January, we will look for every opportunity to work with our Republican colleagues in a bipartisan manner to put the people of Michigan first."
Right to Life of Michigan in a statement boasts its endorsed candidates won last night. Three of the four Republicans who knocked out Dem incumbents were endorsed by the anti-abortion group after Dems ran heavily on abortion rights.
As the last votes in Michigan are counted (98% in), Slotkin (D) ahead of Rogers (R) by about 10k votes (this got as high as 12k at one point). Trump (R) ahead of Harris (D) by about 93k.
Rep. Denise Mentzer (D-Mount Clemens) narrowly wins reelection. The House will sit at a 58-52 Republican majority in the 2025-26 term.
Churches one of the harder working House incumbents seeking reelection this year.
Republican Rylee Linting unseats Rep. Jaime Churches (D-Wyandotte).
Seats 55 and 56 for the House Republicans.
This political reporter tried and failed to get a full night's sleep as results trickled in. My sleepy take: not surprised Trump increased his vote numbers. I am surprised Harris couldn't match Biden & run up score in Kent, Oakland.
Democratic incumbents defeated in key seats across the state so far. GOP could grow House majority but at the very least have 56 seats now.
BULLETIN: House Republicans retake majority in Michigan House.

Gongwer subscribers, be sure to read @bensolis1's final story on the race for Michigan's 15 electoral votes. It's a dandy.
Michigan remains the golden prize on any 2024 electoral map that sounds victory for Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump, but the respective candidates will rely on high turnout if they want to secure the state. bit.ly/4eeeXaP
SOS says Flint is also moving through absentees quickly compared to previous elections
11:30 a.m. update from Michigan SOS office: - 3.3M total early vote so far (46.1% of active, registered voters) - 3,704 same day voter registrations - Detroit is moving through AV ballots "extremely quickly" - In-person, precinct vote won't be available til after polls close
Happy election day. Daycare is closed today and I'm about to cave and give my 3 year old an ice cream at 9:30 am.
We documented every presidential/veep campaign stop in Michigan for the past nine months so you wouldn't have to. We barely got all 71 of them on Page 4A of today's @detroitnews For history.
When you're a political journalist & it's election week & you're about to have a baby
