I had to learn that, before gathering any information from students (assessments, surveys, etc.), I needed a plan for how I was going to use that information. Not acting on it communicated that it wasn't important enough to me. I didn't want my students to feel that.

Everything changed for me when I started asking, "Does my grading system instill fear or hope?" That's honestly all it took. My job is not to terrify kids of failure. My job is to help students see their potential and growth.
The biggest change was that I became more intentional about providing multiple opportunities for learning and then calculating it in a way so that older, lower scores didn’t impact the final score for each skill. That, and I stopped using large summative make-or-break assessments
