The most fitting memorial for people killed on US roads isn’t ghost bikes or flowers. It’s bollards and jersey barriers. It’s narrow streets, wide sidewalks and protected bike lanes. It’s laws that set the mobility and safety of people over the throughput and storage of cars.

I follow several parents on Xitter who have lost their children to road violence. I think about them a lot. The automobile industry, and their handmaidens, US DOTs have worked hard to normalize road deaths and shift the blame from those doing the killing to those doing the dying.

The FSS Story Map honors and remembers those lost to crashes and those who have suffered life-changing injuries. Explore stories by photo, location, or name. And, when you’re ready, we invite you to use the form to add your own story to the map. familiesforsafestreets.org/map

I'm continually amazed that if an at-fault driver who kills someone remains at the scene, the final statement from the press is almost always: 'the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating...' as if they are such a conscientious person.

Haven't people like Amy Cohen and Fabiola Mendieta paid a high enough price? @Carl Heastie - do right by the families who lose over 250 loved ones a year in NYC and bring this to a vote.

Hour 72 of Amy and Fabiola's hunger strike for Sammy's Law. They aren't giving up. We aren't giving up. @GovKathyHochul, @NYCMayor, @NYCCouncil, @AARPNY + more all support this. We have 36 NYC co-sponsors and 55 total sponsors. No more excuses @CarlHeastie Let's get it done.

It's hour 74 of Amy and Fabiola's hunger strike and your calls are working. Keep them up. Every call to Speaker Heastie counts. (518) 455-3791

All of #NYC (which includes kids, young adults & families) deserve safe streets. NYC should be able to lower its own speed limits so it can save lives. It's why we called @CarlHeastie to ask why he refuses to bring Sammy's Law to a vote. Can you ask him, too? (518) 455-3791

You not only don’t hold the auto industry accountable for well over 40,000 violent deaths a year and climate destruction you subsidize this already hugely profitable industry. @SecretaryPete this isn’t right

No more delay. It's time for Congressional action to hold railroad companies accountable.

I used to be one of the only Vision Zero advocates I knew who hadn't lost an immediate family member to traffic violence. I can't say that anymore. My uncle Jim was killed by a driver while riding his bike. We cannot stop fighting until this stops happening.
