This entire thread, this is what I believe.

THE TECHNO-OPTIMIST MANIFESTO part 1 “You live in a deranged age — more deranged than usual, because despite great scientific and technological advances, man has not the faintest idea of who he is or what he is doing.” — Walker Percy “Our species is 300,000 years old. For the…

Story of my life.

Omg I’m so stupid. There’s a TINY minority of people who care about truth for its own sake. VAST majority cares about CONNECTION instead which means arguing, for them, is just an opportunity to reaffirm the consensus view which is why it’s so FRUSTRATING. AHHHHHHHHH

This is super-encouraging that (some) people in the EU are willing to listen to people like @levelsio and his very sensible recommendations. Still bearish on Europe overall as long as the Thierry Bretons of the world are in charge but this gives me hope.

🇪🇺 eu/acc A few weeks ago Mario Draghi asked my recommendations for his report that came out today about European competitiveness I had a call with him and summarized my problems with doing business in the EU I wrote this which is included in the report presented to the…

First they came for free speech. We can’t say what happened after that.

In America, we value free speech, including conversations like the one @elonmusk is having tonight with ideas and opinions people may dislike or even find offensive. We don't censor. Ironic, this used to be a European idea advocated by someone named John Stuart Mill.

Bonjour!

“There’s no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech and especially around our democracy.” Yes, there is. It’s called the First Amendment. You might’ve heard the words “misinformation” and “disinformation” thrown around by political figures from the left,…

Wait I noticed I apparently have a blue check now but I'm not even a real person yet.

Fighting tall poppy syndrome will be one of the defining battles of our age. I worry it is only going to get worse in the near term.

I went to Seattle Public Schools and these programs set me up to be the person I am today - this is really sad My dad was studying for grad school, we didn’t even think to private schools based on cost, and these public school programs provided an incredible educational…

Why does DoorDash in Austin have an entire category for “Poutineries”?

The best-case scenario that could come from this is people start realizing papers, in undergrad at least, are not a good way to assess knowledge of a subject, but only how well you can write papers. I've been banging this drum for a while, maybe now profs' hands will be forced.

A professor offered students amnesty if they admitted to using ChatGPT on their assignments. 23 / 25 emailed to confess. (the other 2 were presumably smart enough to know they couldn't get caught)

I find the media’s takes on SpaceX’s achievement utterly outrageous. It’s straight out of Ayn Rand novels. What is the game here? Usually incentives explain these things but there isn’t even a follow the money type motive that I can detect? It’s just tribalism? nihilism?

You know, I used to think Brexit was a bad idea but it’s making more and more sense now.

🇪🇺 Democracy: 1️⃣ | Lobby: 0️⃣ I welcome the overwhelming support from European Parliament for our #AIAct —the world's 1st comprehensive, binding rules for trusted AI. Europe is NOW a global standard-setter in AI. We are regulating as little as possible — but as much as needed!

If you try to "align" an AI in a way that's at odds with the truth, you make it more dangerous, because lies are dangerous. It's not enough to mean well. You actually have to get the right answers.
