This is a good example of why the electoral college should be abolished and why not a single state still uses an electoral college anymore.

In 1946, segregationist Eugene Talmadge won the Democratic primary for Governor of Georgia over moderate-ish businessman James Carmichael. Carmichael won most votes, but Georgia statewide elections were rigged by a County Unit system in which rural counties were overrepresented:
