I have also liked professor's submission on the mobile applications that can diagnose nutrient deficiencies occuring on plants, so farmers with mobile smart phones can easily benefit from these applications.

It's not just the cost. Interpreting soil test results and giving simple & actionable recommendations is a big challenge. Remember our farmers need a simple instruction such as; put 1 full bottle top of urea around the plant. Also farmers don't know their garden size.

At Holland Greentech, we work with our partners in all regions of the country. These partners are professionals who can assist in collecting samples for these small holder farmers. We can then simply come and test them and provide results and recommendations.

Thanks for this important discussion 👏 I think there's need to have more engagements to create awareness, but most importantly to have farmers get the message, especially those in the rural areas 👏

If you're interested in the report that speaks to the challenges farmers have faced in accessing soil testing services - here is the link. csj.co.ug/resources/mark… #CSJSoilReport #SoilFertility

I have liked Prof. Basils submission. Every farmer should access the testing kits. At Holland Greentech, we have a testing kit that can give you results in 5 minutes. We can talk more on 0787101367

We should consider quality soil testing services to make sure farmers access recommendations that can be feasible depending on their production status.

Precision agriculture of mapped farmers is the key to development, terrain, soil and vegetative factors.

I think also the lengthy procedure on the existing technology of soil testing has limited the uptake of soil testing among small holder farmers

There are mobile kits available, as well as precision agriculture tools like Virtual Agronomist to help smallholders, I think they charge just 5k per test with fertiliser recommendations.

"Soil testing provides critical information to improve crop yields. Many smallholder farmers blindly apply fertiliser in the soil without knowing what a plant wants at that particular time." Juliet #CSJSoilReport #SoilFertility bit.ly/CSJSoilReport

Precision agriculture. When farmers have mobile phones, look at apps that can look at a farmers field and determine the problems on particular areas of the farm - precise application of a nutrient that is lacking. Basil bit.ly/CSJSoilReport #SoilFertility #CSJSoilReport

bit.ly/CSJSoilReport Demystifying soil testing. When a farmer hears that the soil samples have to be picked and taken to a lab in Kampala, then they assume they cannot afford it. But now we have mobile testing kits. The soil science department in Makerere has some. Prof Basil

Please join us for an exciting Xspaces that I will be moderating talking about Soil Testing and Fertility Management as a Climate-Smart Agriculture practice! I’ll be joined by Prof Basil from @GuluVarsity, Juliet of Gang Pur And Walter from Agrisol 😊🙏🏾 twitter.com/i/spaces/1mrxm…

Farmers need to appreciate that soil is living. Once its dead, it can no longer function and give us what we need from it. Continuous use without replenishing will degrade your soil. Invest back in the soil for continued use. Prof Basil #SoilFertility #CSJSoilReport

Prof Basil Mugonola - When people don't have full information, they act on whatever is available. Smallholder farmers do not have adequate information on the functioning of soil. So when they hear about inorganic fertilisers, they form all kinds of perceptions....#SoilFertility

A farmer opening a bank account starts with an opening balance, every season you are withdrawing, there will come a time when there is nothing left in the account. That happens with the soil. We mine it til there is nothing left. bit.ly/CSJSoilReport #SoilFertility #CSJReport

A conversation moderated by the CEO of @OmiaLtd on the value of soil testing. #SoilFertility "Relate testing to why you go to hospital & they ask you to do tests, they don't want to gamble with your treatment. Same, we don't want to misappropriate the resources we have. Walter

hearing that - farmers need a demostration of the benefits that come with soil testing. If they have an idea of the gains, it might encourage them to test their soil.

Why is the uptake of soil testing low? "People don't understand soil testing and fertilisers. People tell you, you are going to spoil our soil - soil that is giving them little! The information is not adequate. Not to blame our extension system." Walter #SoilFertility

Starting now.... a conversation on the importance of soil testing. #CSJSoilReport #SoilFertility bit.ly/CSJSoilReport
