U.S. Attorney Ryan Buchanan says there is “rampant use of tasers.” And, excessive use of force is “not confined to a few bad actors,” adding that disciple is virtually nonexistent. Officers simply go back to their jobs.
DOJ Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke says she hopes the investigation “pushes” the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Sheriff Patrick Labat, who was just re-elected, to make much-needed reforms. Notes that inmates are awaiting trial and have not been convicted.
Officials also say inmates do not receive enough food, leading to malnourishment. And that jail staff use excessive force and solitary confinement to punish inmates, including when they simply ask for help. Also, inmates are not getting “adequate mental and medical health care.”
Breaking: The Justice Department has completed its investigation into the Fulton County Jail, finding conditions violate the constitution and federal law. Officials say detention there is a “death sentence” for adults and young people. @wabenews
