Here is my annual Best Little Moments from songs I enjoyed in 2023 --> docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

Told my students today that while one song rarely changes the world, at best, writing songs deepens and refines ones powers of observation, teaching us how to see and how to make something real out of what we find. What an essential, eternal, and underrated practice of living.

Dems love following rules. They just don’t like it when they bring them to this or asking of what use they are

My prediction is that the proliferation of Quincy Jones' ethic about talent and musicianship will create a new permission structure for music critics to listen to a song and write, with newfound confidence: "This sounds terrible. These guys suck."

For @pitchfork’s Sunday Review, I wrote about an astonishing (yet overlooked) album from reggae’s golden age: Hugh Mundell’s 1978 debut ‘Africa Must Be Free by 1983.’ He wrote/recorded it at age 14-15!! But sadly he was killed 5 yrs after his classic debut pitchfork.com/reviews/albums…

Marathon day best day in the city baby

Pop songs aren't affidavits, they are not good because they are true

Yeah I’ve got the fall classic on: Espers’ 2004 fully realized self-titled debut

Think I’d watch basically any movie set in a secluded research outpost. It’s a lot like a cabin in the woods, but the key difference is that there’s always a computer that tells you how you are going to die

The king. The king. Or as I call him the baffled king. The little baffled king. Isn't he a little baffled? Composing his hallelujahs. Some say he was writing, I like to say he was composing. [suddenly very loudly] And I've met the guy!
