Waiting for the @GavinNewsom Emergency Bill that strips arcane & costly labor rules, BMR mandates & replacement-unit requirements from California's major housing laws. Plain bagels, now. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

If Gavin Newsom really wants to do something to protect "California values," he should immediately push through radical housing reform that will make it much easier and cheaper to build in the state and keep people from leaving because they can't afford to live there anymore.

BREAKING: Gov. Gavin Newsom calls special legislative session to “protect California values, including fundamental civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, immigrant families.” The special session will begin Dec. 2 when new California lawmakers get sworn in.

I've spent most of my child's life trying to find a place like this. I moved from CA to WA to IN. I found it in Carmel, IN. I hope California Forever succeeds and inspires more places like it.

I don't get the hate for this project. No one dreams anymore and this feels like the group is really pushing for something so much better than anything else in urban America.

show man any existing place in AMERICA that is trying to achieve this so cool

Show me any existing urban place in California that is even *trying* to achieve this for my children

A city's true measure of safety? When our 8-year-olds can walk to school on their own with confidence. The East Solano Plan wants to create a community that prioritizes people over cars with neighborhoods where parents feel at ease. (1/2)

The sobering part of this goal ... is that there are very very FEW neighborhoods in the United States that meet this test of children able to walk to school by themselves

This is a great test It requires density of children and schools … in addition ro safety

100%. My 8 (now 9) year old can not only walk to school but also pick up her little brothers, play with them at the playground for half an hour, and walk home.

Cities are at their best when children can live and thrive in them. Safety, abundant housing, and good schools are key to making this happen. Im excited to see how East Solano realizes this vision.

On the "software" side, we’ve already gotten started @EdgeEsmeralda was a 30-day popup village, designed as a prototype for the permanent village We hosted EE in Healdsburg, in part because it's just 15 mins from the land we're buying twitter.com/EdgeEsmeralda/…

Edge Esmeralda was a month-long "popup village" — a sort of cross between a college campus & family summer camp ~1,300 people of all ages came to the charming small town of Healdsburg to learn, build, & live together for the month of June Can't wait to do it again next year!

On the “hardware” side, here are some places that have inspired our plans for Esmeralda: twitter.com/devonzuegel/st… We plan to build one of the most beautiful new places in the country

I've been collecting a list of recently-built places with good urban fabric. Here are some of my favorites: 1. Las Catalinas is a hill town overlooking an ocean cove in Costa Rica, built just over a decade ago with the bones of a classic Mediterranean hill town (@LasCatalinas)

I want abundant row homes, which is why I support California Forever's @EastSolanoPlan and will loudly support any other effort to build them at scale, especially in CA

Would you believe me if I told you these row houses were built in 2023? We never forgot how to build missing-middle housing simply and beautifully. We just made it illegal to do so pretty much everywhere.

All cities were once new cities. “The East Solano Plan is attempting something that has not been done in a century–to create a new community that has density, mixed use, and public life.”

All cities were once “new” cities. Even in a young nation like America, we've seen numerous examples of newly founded cities grow into thriving urban centers. New cities can be a way to accommodate growing populations by creating cities of manageable size and scale. The East…
