Understanding Self-Harm & Self-Injury: A Thread For Self-Injury Awareness Day 🧡 and all of the other days because #MentalHealthMatters #TheLearningNeverStops #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealth #SelfInjuryAwarenessDay
Discuss the importance of a defined work space. Students with #ADHD need a distraction free place, and a process to help them get started. Together, these strategies can lessen procrastination and help students make progress and feel good about themselves and the tasks at hand.
When a student with #ADHD is stuck, it can help to ask, “Are you procrastinating or are you avoiding?” Then, talk it through to figure out what they might be avoiding.
The habit of using the Goal Tracker empowers students to see where they under or over estimate their use of time. This can change the dynamic at school or at home. #ADHD students can this tool to organize and prioritize, even after coaching sessions end. tinyurl.com/3bjvwhk8
Download my goal tracker to help #ADHD students practice organization and executive function skills. Work with teens to create a to-do list and then estimate how long they expect each task to take. Then they can record the actual time each task took. tinyurl.com/3bjvwhk8
A homework system shouldn't deprive #ADHD teens of the opportunity to negotiate, practice #selfadvocacy and build confidence. Coaches can help them understand how to follow up with teachers and how to present and explain their grades to coaches, tutors, and parents.
Establish a routine for dealing with an online grade book. Systems like PowerSchool can create conflict in families. #ADHD coaches can help parents and teens set a time to check online grades together, discuss and review assignments, and communicate with teachers as necessary.
#ADHD coaches can help manage electronics. A basket at the bottom of stairs where devices are placed before bedtime, or a charging station in the pantry are just two ideas. The sooner these systems are put in place, the easier it is to make sure everyone gets the sleep they need.
Phones, tablets, and computers are unhealthy before bed. The blue light they emit interferes with sleep and having them in the bedroom makes it difficult for parents to separate #ADHD teens from their technology.
It's crucial to create a system for managing electronics. Technology is a hot-button issue, especially in #ADHD households. Many teens don’t get enough sleep because they are using some type of electronic device late into the night.
In high school, teens learn to balance academics with an expanding social life. Their independence is growing, but they still benefit from parental help. #ADHD coaches can help support families as they work through this time of transition.
It's very important to combine study strategies that work for each individual. Print things out, write things down. Manipulate the information in various ways to help a student with #ADHD or #executivefunctioning issues store and keep it in her memory.
Focus on strengthening weak academic areas with #ADHD students. Quizlet and Khan Academy are excellent resources to bolster learning in challenging subjects.
Creating a homework system is crucial for #ADHD students. The system should help them know what is assigned, prioritize what needs to be done, and keep track of completed work. I've developed a downloadable Grade & Goal Tracker that helps you do this. leahylearning.com/grade-goal-tra…
To If you teach a student who struggles with #ADHD, set a time to discuss disruptive behavior outside of the classroom, after the immediate, stressful moment has passed.
The challenges that come along with #ADHD can change drastically as you move on from elementary school through high school, and beyond into higher education and adulthood.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (#ADHD or #ADD) is not merely a childhood condition. It lasts a lifetime, evolving and changing with time, environmental and emotional stressors, hormones, and age.
An effective #ADHD coach is one who is prepared to offer different strategies for different stages of life, from elementary school through adulthood.
#ADHD is a life-long condition, one that impacts patients through school and into their adult lives — perhaps into retirement. Although the condition is steady, its challenges are forever changing.
As far back as the 18th century, attention was believed to be one of the central characteristics of awareness, something that took real effort and was not automatic. #ADHD
