That’s a wrap for this evenings discussion with Kenneth R. Feinberg on the Presidential Lecture series. Thank you for following along to hear a great public servants time in his career.
“How do you maintain your sanity?” Feinberg was asked. “When you are asked by someone of power to do those tasks you have the patriotic responsibility to do it. There’s plenty of weeping but you do it in the back room and continue on,” Feinberg stated.
“I don’t think that today a 9/11 claim could be collected due to not being one nation and one community,” said Feinberg.
“Why do we use money?” asked Daniels. “Money in a capitalist system has ways been the great leveler and you get some degree of equity as some degree of loss,” said Feinberg.
“The median award in the 9/11 tax claim was $1.6 million,” said Feinberg. They had no idea how much it would actually cost.
Feinberg stated that there are two different ways that you calculate value of a life. When you calculate that in the American system those who make more will get more in that setting.
“Empathy, the less you say the better,” says Feinberg. “That’s one lesson that I learned.”
“It is debilitating, it is the worst thing that I do,” said Feinberg. “Calculating the compensation of tragedy is debilitating.”
Feinberg was tasked with overseeing the compensation funds for the 911 terrorist attacks. “He handled his tasks gratefully,” said President Mitch Daniels.
I will be live tweeting tonight’s Presidential Lecture Series- “What’s a Life Worth” with President Daniels and Kenneth R. Feinberg. They will be discussing tragedies and lives lost and what those are worth.
What’s a life worth? Purdue President Mitch Daniels will get down in the nitty gritty with Kenneth R. Feinberg to discuss this topic and his role in compensating tragedies. Follow along tomorrow night at 6:30pm for this discussion on the Presidential Lecture Series.
