Three things I should have done as a graduate student: 1. Investigate the kinds of non-academic jobs that PhDs in my field tend to obtain 2. Attend an industry conference (e.g., in data analytics) 3. Built a non-academic professional network of PhDs on LinkedIn #Altac #postac
Be sure to carefully check your Halloween candy. Someone tried to hide a professor with an “exciting research opportunity” in this Snickers bar.
What I thought non-academic careers would be like as a grad student: • boring • unrewarding • evil / selfish What my industry career has been like: • evolving • satisfying • morally neutral (or even +) Plus, it gave me: • more money • more balance • location freedom
Good morning to everyone except ppl who reply all in emails when it’s clearly not needed.
If you're a PhD student who is industry-curious, please reach out and/or apply for our internship at @SlackHQ! This is a super unique group that does a mix of normal industry work and straight up academic work and collaboration! Info in thread!
Normalize not feeling grad guilt.
Please remind yourself you *don't have to feel guilty* for not beginning a PhD program, quitting one, declining to apply for a job, resigning a position, or leaving your academic work behind completely. Academic culture wants you to feel shame. Reject this. Live your life.
Pro-tip for academics wanting to go industry: Get off Twitter and get on LinkedIn. You’ll thank me later.
Good morning and happy Monday to everyone except people who ask for cover letters and then never read them.
My industry job has way more time flexibility than my academic job ever did. Getting to pick which +50 hours a week you work isn’t time flexibility. Kinda ironic to have a tenured Ivy League professor punch down on career paths that +70% of PhDs get. Elitism at its finest.
I see we’re at the stage of anti-academia in here that we’re now claiming with a straight face that it offers less time flexibility and intellectual freedom *on average* than non-academic jobs. OK.
