news: David Hoffmann, the Florida billionaire building up a stake in newspaper chain Lee Enterprises, just announced he is buying up shares in the parent company of The Dallas Morning News.

You know things have gotten really bad when former Dallas mayors are showing the Morning News editorial writers the current mayor's weird-ass text responses when they ask him about his absence from critical local election campaigns. dallasnews.com/opinion/editor…

Great insights from @goodmoine on the many reasons the HERO/STU vote shows Dallas politics have turned upside down. This is much bigger than the victory of two bad changes to our local constitution.

The interesting thing about the Dallas HERO deal was how it punched the establishment in the mouth. How Dallas has always done its political business failed against a nimbler opponent, broad pro-cop proposition language, and a high turnout nat'l election. dmagazine.com/frontburner/20…

Final returns came in at 2:30 a.m. Most Dallas propositions cruised. U, which makes the city hire 900 cops to maintain a force of 4,000, won by about 3k votes—50.5 percent. S and T continued the way they had all night: S (sue the city) easily won, T (city manager survey) fell.

Meet Madeline Anderson Thomas and Sister Patricia Ridley, two of 35 "poll chaplains" at polling places in Dallas County. (These two were outside Winnetka Elementary in Oak Cliff.) You should say hi if you see them out there! dmagazine.com/micropost/a-qu…

The executive director of Dallas HERO—the group that got propositions S, T, and U, onto the ballot to change the city charter—and his wife have been accused of entering the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Citizen sleuth @K2theSky first posted the footage. dmagazine.com/frontburner/20…

It's time we talked about what Dallas HERO and its supporters are doing behind the scenes to promote their charter amendments. dmagazine.com/frontburner/20…

NEW: Conservative hotelier Monty Bennett and a California-based company that offers protesters-for-hire have seeded an “astroturf” right-wing influence network that has kicked into overdrive to push controversial “Dallas HERO” city charter amendments. 1/ texasobserver.org/dallas-hero-in…

Adding Alperen Sengun into Dallas Mavericks copy is reader service.

I should also note that I was tending to a sick baby yesterday and so @goodmoine gamely stepped in to do the heavy lifting on the edit. His compensation: making 10 different references to Alperen Sengun's greatness (which we had to cut from the copy). I'm not even kidding.

It’s better reading this in Big Tex’s voice.

For Dallas voters, the most interesting local matter is at the bottom of your ballot. The city's establishment has gotten the gang back together to spend, spend, spend on messaging to block three charter amendments they say will cripple city government. dmagazine.com/frontburner/20…

ForwardDallas, the update to the city's nearly 20-year-old land use plan, passes 11-4. No votes from: Mayor Eric Johnson; Councilmembers Carolyn King Arnold, Jesse Moreno, and Cara Mendelsohn. Background here, new story tomorrow: dmagazine.com/frontburner/20…

My take on today's bombshell: For all @DPDChiefGarcia's political prowess, he was steadfast in his unwillingness to suffer fools or show patience for inadequate leadership. If poor choices at City Hall led to this departure, that’s a bad deal for Dallas. dallasnews.com/news/commentar…

Chief García sent this memo out to his officers confirming his retirement. His departure has stunned his command staff and City Council members. He’s leaving for Austin to become their top city executive over public safety. @dallasnews dallasnews.com/news/public-sa…
