Why are older people usually more resilient than younger people? Because the older you are, the more failures and hardships you have endured and learned from and this leads to a deeper and broader problem solving and coping repertoire. Resilience scores go up as people age.
Resilience is not a set of skills but is an approach to life. A California centenarian who works out at the gym regularly says her biggest advice is to stay resilient and live life with no regrets. She says to try to be happy and think beautiful thoughts.
Self reliance comes from knowing you are capable - like changing a tire on the side of the road or giving an extemporaneous talk. How do you become more self-reliant and confident? Is there something you want to do but are afraid? Find a way and your self-reliance will grow.
I'm noticing that in a woke world, self reliance is frowned upon. After more than 30 years, I've learned that self reliance, which is being able to depend on yourself and knowing that others can depend on you too is essential to resilience. I'm not willing to give that up.
The capacity for resilience wilts when aspirations are mediocre.
The University of North Carolina (UNC) moved against encroaching woke culture and voted to ban diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) statements and politically preferential hiring. This is a win for individual resilience.
It takes a great deal of courage to go against groupthink but this is necessary for resilience to grow.
If you succumb to wokeism, I guarantee your resilience will suffer.
