I have seen your face in the making at the heart of the world and there is no one more beloved, Genya Safin, brave and unbreakable.

I don’t get jokes or sunsets or poetry, but I know metal.” His fingers flexed unconsciously as if he were physically grasping for words. “Beauty was your armor. Fragile stuff, all show. But what’s inside you? That’s steel. It’s brave and unbreakable. And it doesn’t need fixing.”

She glimpsed a few words in David’s scrawl: Ideas for compliments—hair (color, texture), smile (causes and effects), talents (tailoring, tonics, sense of style—inquire on “style”), teeth? size of feet?

“Genya?” He went to his knees beside her. She clutched his sleeve. For a moment, she didn’t seem to recognize him. Her red hair was thick with dust, her face streaked with tears. “I can’t find him,” she said, her voice lost, bewildered. “I can’t find David.”

I will march with you in times of war. I will rest with you in times of peace. I will forever be the weapon in your hand, the fighter at your side, the friend who awaits your return.” His voice grew stronger and louder with every word.

“Don’t take it personally,” she said. “David is a great metalworker. He can fold a blade so sharp it will cut through flesh like water. But if you’re not made of metal or glass, he isn’t interested.”

How was it that Genya had fallen so hard for someone so serious and so quiet and so seemingly oblivious to her gorgeousness? Or was that exactly why she had fallen for David?

Genya led me past all of them to where a Fabrikator hunched over a set of tiny glass discs. He was pale, reed-thin, and in dire need of a haircut. “Hello, David,” said Genya. David looked up, blinked, gave a curt nod, and bent back to his work.

We strode down the hall, and when we got to David’s room, Tamar rapped once at the door before pushing in. Apparently, Adrik and Harshaw had been evicted for the night. A very bleary Genya and David blinked up at us from beneath the covers of a single narrow cot.

Nikolai looked to David for help, but David just shrugged. “I don’t argue with my wife when she’s right.”

The only distraction he ever had was Genya. When he looked at her, you could see that he had found his perfect equation.

But she saw the way Genya clutched the papers in her hands, the way David’s gaze snapped to his wife, the desire to protect her the one thing that could draw him from his work.

“Oh, David,” Genya said, taking his hand. “You’ve never threatened to murder anyone for me before.” “Haven’t I?” he murmured distractedly, placed a kiss on her knuckles, and continued reading.

“Just a moment,” David said, planting a finger on the page to mark his place in his book. “What was your name?” “Yuri Vedenen, moi soverenyi.” “Yuri Vedenen, if you upset my wife again, I will kill you where you stand.”

I patted her hand reassuringly. “He’ll come around. He’s just shy.” “Maybe I should lie down on a table in the workroom and wait to see if he welds something to me.” “I think that’s the way most great love stories begin.”

Genya cleared her throat. “Um. The thing is, you may not have to. David has an idea.” “Actually, it was Genya’s idea,” David said.
