New preprint up! We sequenced hundreds of samples from across one of Earth's oldest living organisms - the Pando aspen clone - to understand how mutations accumulate and spread in long-lived clonal organisms. Our results were…surprising. 1/30

I've been reporting H5N1 for months & have gotten so used to hearing about potential, untested cases among farm workers that I hardly note it. I already wrote this: kffhealthnews.org/news/article/b… This means we don't know how susceptible people are to H5 infections. That's a problem.

Serious quandary here. Even if there is no H2H transmission, shouldn’t we be concerned that there is growing sporadic animal to human transmissions in US? Is this the new reality where H5N1 now just causes more human spillover infections from farms? What does future hold -…

🚨 We discovered a new genetic code, "Genetic Code 34," sporadically distributed in archaea. Select archaea have genome-wide recoding of the TAG stop codon to pyrrolysine; the adoption of this code was likely driven by metabolic processes. (1/2) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

When the human brain dies, high-frequency oscillations (>25Hz) intensify, interconnect and are more strongly modulated by lower frequencies (<25 Hz). As if the brain is giving a final burst of neural harmony at the moment of death. pnas.org/doi/epub/10.10… #Neuroscience

Fascinating essay in @CurrentBiology by Mikhail Matz @heatshok which synthesizes the past 30 years of research on coral-algal symbiosis, and provides a novel framework to view this perhaps fraught relationship (think farmers and cows).

"autistic adults experience complex emotions" is an insane thing to research, up there with "are women capable of thought" and "are children people or property".

Beautiful new work on the evolution of quantitative species differences in connectivity in singing mice. This will be the first study among many to use this new approach to study circuit evolution. Really creative & timely work.

Can the difference lie in the statistics of OMC projection patterns? Enter MAPseq developed by @JustusKebschull and @TonyZador, where neurons carry unique RNA barcodes that can be sequenced to yield brain-wide projections for thousands of neurons at single-cell resolution.
