Is China becoming a more important destination for exports from Southeast Asia? Not really, with one major exception: Indonesia.

And that’s a wrap for the 2024 Indonesia Update ‘How Jokowi Changed Indonesia’. Two fascinating days with this wonderful group of presenters (some not pictured here too), a full house, and a huge online audience. It was a privilege to co-convene with my colleague @sdjaffrey 🙏

I'm deeply saddened to hear the news of Pak Faisal's passing. He was one of Indonesia's most prominent economists; but he was also an activist and unwavering advocate for democracy and clean government. And he was also just a lovely man. Selamat jalan, Pak Faisal.

Congratulations @EdwardAspinall and @savirani, and all the authors too 👏👏👏

Very pleased that our new book, Governing Urban Indonesia, has been published. Coedited with @savirani and supported by @ANUIndonesia, the book takes a deep dive into how urbanization is changing the nature of politics in the country. bookshop.iseas.edu.sg/publication/79…

Well said @SusannahCPatton Australia is upping its economic diplomacy in Asia, while also undervaluing the critical role education plays in bilateral relations with our neighbours. Looking forward to hearing more from the @AsiaSocietyAus new Asia Agenda, launching next week.

Next week we are launching Asia Agenda. Here are some insights from @SusannahCPatton @LowyInstitute, Dr Belle Lim, MindTribes, Varsha Devi Balakrishnan @voyagestudents, and Professor Ren Yi @unisqaus on Own Goals. Keep up to see more of this exciting new initiative. #AsiaAgenda

The Jokowi presidency witnessed a return of anti-government protest on a scale and intensity not experienced in Indonesia since democratic transition. Ed Aspinall and Fauziah Mayangsari will explore civic space, political activism and protest under Jokowi at this year's Update.

In this piece, we use @KuipersNicholas's excellent candidate survey data to examine the extent to which money matters for electoral success in Indonesia, and whether it matters more for certain types of candidates.
