Two important Medicaid rules are out for comment until July 3. Particularly important to share are stories about problems getting services in and out of managed care. whymycarecounts.org/access-rule/ & whymycarecounts.org/managed-care/

Reports indicate @eiweil and I were decently amusing for 5 pm, so surely that means watch our FAccT presentation on using tech skills to help fairness of benefits tech?!?

If you missed my tutorial with @esquared181 / @benefitstechhub at FAccT on using yr technical skills to materially help actual people, it was recorded! It’s tutorial 7 and for whatever reason the video got broken up until 2 parts, but look for it in the replay section of Hopin ❤️

If you’ve never thought of FOIA requests as risqué advocacy, apparently you’re missing out!!

Do you want to get to the more risqué side of FOIA + public records? You’re right where you need to be. We’ve already talked about making a good request (10/3/22 thread). Once you do that, how do you manage and use the info the government gives you? 🧵 on best practices 1/

Not surprising information, but examples of the real barriers to healthcare for people with disabilities. The comments focused on whether money can be made on the one individual are particularly frustrating. Not how this is supposed to work under the ADA! But that’s our system.

Under anonymity in focus groups, doctors spoke of being eager to get rid of patients with disabilities, mentioning accessibility issues and the shrinking amount of time they are allotted to see people. “We have to change the culture of medicine,” one said.nyti.ms/3MXqwaB

fraud alert systems often target beneficiaries and wreak havoc on their lives when they need the benefits they are eligible for. Meanwhile, fraud on a significant scale happens elsewhere in the system, e.g, Brett Farve & MS, Medicare advantage plans. We should learn from the EU.

The Dutch government's faulty "fraud detection" algorithm for child-related benefits terrorized tens of thousands of people. And, it was explicitly racialized—people w/ dual nationalities or relatives from other countries were targeted. 1/ politico.eu/article/dutch-…

You've heard a lot about Brett Favre stealing millions of $$$ from welfare. What he did is wrong. But what Mississippi has been doing is even worse. Put on your 🤿 because we're diving in. 🧵 /1

Don’t forget to join us for our intro webinar tomorrow afternoon. @kevindeliban has somehow upped the nerd-level of a discussion of algorithms in public benefits, with sci-if humor promises. I make no such promises, just that it will be interesting!

Tomorrow is a BIG day. Join our gathering of techno-mages + techno-sages to fight techno-crazes (algorithms + bad tech in public benefits). We’re hosting our first webinar to show you the site, resources, + community-building tools. Open to all. Register: us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regist…

icymi, we are apparently going to have “wild fun” on our webinar. Surely you at least want to know what that is and stay for the Hub intro?

Wild fun! Come to the greatest tech-justice-in-public-benefits webinar that 9/22 has to offer. We won’t have drinks, food, or music. But, it’ll be a party of justice: riveting presenters, haute couture slides, + inside access to hot resources. Sign up now: us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regist…

Super excited at all the interest shown in the Benefits Tech Advocacy Hub! Really looking forward to helping build this community to impact how technology affects public benefits and causes harm.

The Hub is a collaboration between public interest technologists, lawyers, + researchers at @arlegalaid , @NHeLP_org , + @TeamUpturn We work with people facing benefits cuts, know the suffering that cuts bring, + understand the fight against algorithms + bad tech from the ground

Super excited to be a part of this with other advocates and technologists and to help it grow!
