Hey @UKLabour, we’re in Liverpool too! 👋 And we’re here to talk about the MILLIONS of people going without the essentials right now. You’ve promised to end the need for emergency food. That’s great. Now we need to see action this Autumn to start delivering the promise. #Lab24
"We can end the need for food banks, but we can’t do it alone" - powerful article in @NewStatesman from @emmarevie @PaulKissack ahead of the Labour Party Conference this weekend. newstatesman.com/uncategorized/…
We're here if you need our help... #foodbank #community #eastlothianfoodbank
New figures from the @TrussellTrust show that half of the people on Universal Credit could not afford to buy food by the end of the month. I asked the Exchequer Secretary what the Government are doing to ensure people don't go hungry this winter.
It’s not right that food banks in our network provided more than 3.1 MILLION food parcels last year. We need all political leaders to set out how they will build a future where no one needs emergency food. Read our new stats and what needs to change 👉 bit.ly/3UJpAdT
❌ Nobody should ever have to turn to a food bank. ❌ But right now, people like Linda are being left with no other option because their income is too low. This has to change. ⤵️
The foodbank charity The Trussell Trust says it’s handed out a record 3.1 million emergency food parcels in the past year. More than a million were given to children but there’s been a significant rise in the number of older people needing help.
With incredibly high numbers of disabled people already in deep poverty, 48% facing hunger, how is making people even poorer going to improve the nation's health or economic performance? PIP is a a policy disaster, because it's incredibly hard to get access to & so many...1/2
The PM is now pushing ahead with a consultation on Personal Independence Payments that was almost published previously (but was considered too controversial). It has some pretty radical ideas including replacing cash payments with access to treatment 1/
🗣️ Almost two thirds of people in destitution live with a chronic health condition or disability. Cutting people’s eligibility for benefits won't help. The PM's speech was an irresponsible war of words on people who already aren’t getting enough support. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi….
🚨 1.5 MILLION emergency food parcels were provided by food banks in our network between April and September. This is the highest number of parcels our network has ever distributed in 6 months. And this is likely to get worse – unless the government steps up to make change. ⤵️
🧵 @UKLabour said that our social security system must work to tackle the soaring need for food banks. And we agree. 🔍 Yet, they haven't said how they're going to do this. We're at Labour Party Conference with @amyhart1707 to call on Labour to make a plan.

Ending the need for food banks: Labour's missing mission Britain needs a bold, long-term plan to tackle the deepening hardship facing millions, write @emmarevie and @PaulKissack Partner content by The @TrussellTrust and @jrf_uk newstatesman.com/spotlight/econ…
This post from @TrussellTrust is what we see too ⬇️ But if we all take a stand, we can change it 💚 Please sign our petition to make sure #UniversalCredit at least covers the cost of the essentials bit.ly/Our-Essentials #guaranteeouressentials #hungerfreefuture @jrf_uk
Low-paid and insecure work is pushing people to food banks. This isn’t right. To fix it, we need a social security system that makes sure we can all afford the essentials when we face tough times. 💚 Will you help us guarantee #OurEssentials? 👉 bit.ly/Our-Essentials
🚨 Come and work at JRF 🚨 📢 We're recruiting for a new Campaigns Officer (2-year FTC) to support the delivery of our major 'Guarantee #OurEssentials' campaign, with the Trussell Trust. 📆 Applications close 10 Oct More info and how to apply here ⤵️ jrf.org.uk/job-vacancy/ca….
If Labour’s goal, as Keir Starmer states, is to “give Britain its future back” then it needs a bold, long-term plan to tackle the deepening hardship facing more and more people. From @emmarevie and me. newstatesman.com/spotlight/econ…
“If it hadn’t been for the food bank helping me out, giving me what I needed at the time, allowing me to concentrate on my recovery, I don’t know where I would be now. “They helped me to maintain sobriety. I don’t say this lightly, it’s literally life saving.”
I’ve signed @TrussellTrust and @jrf_uk’s petition, calling on UK political party leaders to ensure the basic rate of Universal Credit covers the cost of life’s essentials. Add your name and join the campaign to guarantee #OurEssentials 👉 action.trusselltrust.org/guarantee-our-…
More families are turning to food banks just to get by. But this can change. The Poverty Strategy Commission Interim Report highlights that we need action from the government, businesses and communities. This must include a social security system that supports us all fully. 💚
📢 The Poverty Strategy Commission launches its Interim Report today. It identifies a “missing” £36bn in resources needed to eradicate #poverty in the UK, equal to £6,000 a year for each of the six million families living in poverty. Read more here: povertystrategycommission.org.uk/tackling-pover…
Shake up of disability benefits announced yesterday - how will it affect disabled people? My view: 🧵 1. SoS Mel Stride's right that many disabled people want to work if the right job and support are available. 2. He's also right the current system doesn't do enough to help. 1/7
As MPs return to Westminster, this should be high priority: More & more people facing deep poverty, severe hardship, hunger & debt. Government has two golden opportunities to show that it understands and take action: Kings Speech and Autumn Statement. 👀
