If you and @carriesymonds and @ConservativeAWF *really* cared about animal welfare and lessening animal suffering... ... you would be opposing this and asking for bans - not providing excuses for mechanisms to let British standards slip to dire US levels.
We all know these “steep tariffs” are actually to look strong... as you let these products through the door. And you can later relax those tariffs to undermine British farmers, undermine food quality, and undermine animal welfare. Please don’t pretend otherwise. It’s painful.
There’s a deep sickness in the fact that Downing Street has issued an instruction that ministers should have no specific policy on animal welfare in its trade negotiations with the US. I sincerely hope the British public will not put up with such nonsense.
