Politicians, prosecutors, retirees and Mexican cartel operatives have all found themselves drawn to the grandstands of New Mexico’s horse tracks. Now, a heated dispute is costing the industry hundreds of thousands. searchlightnm.org/?p=98526&previ…

Some very cool news

Animal migration 🦬 news: I'm stepping down next month as editor of @OutsideMagazine, a place I'll miss a ton. A week after that, I'll start a new job as editor of @SearchlightNM, an amazing Santa Fe-based nonprofit that does powerful investigative reporting all over the state.🍾

There's been a lot of attention paid this week to the @NewMexicoDOJ investigation into Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. I just got back from there, and found that MMC is just one barrier to care for undocumented residents: searchlightnm.org/life-death-or-…

Super proud of my fellow @SearchlightNM reporter Alicia Inez Guzman for this one

Worth noting that a week removed from independent monitor James Ginger’s latest report, which put @ABQPOLICE in 100% compliance with the DOJ consent decree, his website has yet to publicly share that report, IMR-19, despite its promise to “serve as a repository” of each report

Want to read something crazy?

The glaring errors in these reports, each of which span hundreds of pages, raise troubling questions about the person responsible for compiling them. More to the point, perhaps, is this question: Has anyone even read them? searchlightnm.org/basic-math-err…

Can’t wait to listen to this

1/3: Late last year, I was approached by Indigenous Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist @connie_walker & her team to help with their latest season of Stolen, focused on the missing/murdered on the Navajo Nation. It was also 25 years since the death of my uncle.

Three months ago, New Mexico issued a $1 million fine to embattled Navajo marijuana grower Dineh Benally and — citing him for “egregious” violations — ordered him to shut down his Torrance County cannabis farm. Benally has done anything but. sfnm.co/43Itnwi

First he got busted in Shiprock, then he got shut down in rural NM, and now Dineh Benally is at it again searchlightnm.org/fined-and-stri…
