That‘s it! Season 1999/2000 has come to an end. We will be back in September with a recap of the season 2000/01. Enjoy the summerbreak!
[20.2.2000] It’s the "GP Adrie Van der Poel" in Hoogerheide Netherlands ending the season of 1999/2000. Richard Groenendaal wins the final race and remains undefeated as World Champion, while race namesake Adrie Van der Poel finishes third and declares his 20-year career over.
[19.2.2000] In Westerlo Belgium the last Belgian race of the season leads to a generational duel. Sven Nys beats Danny De Bie and scores his 21st win of the season. For De Bie, World Champion of 1989, this was the last race of his career, hanging up his bike at the age of 40.
[13.2.2000] The eleventh and last race of the Superprestige season takes place in Heerlen Netherlands. World Champion Richard Groenendaal wins the day's victory, Sven Nys finishes fifth to repeat his overall series victory from the previous year.
[13.2.2000] Drama in the GvA-Trofee. Arne Daelmans & Bart Wellens compete in Oostmalle for overall victory. Daelmans finally beats Wellens in the race, but in the series ranking both men are tied on points. Thanks to the day's victory Daelmans is declared the overall winner.
[12.2.2000] In Eeklo Belgium, the victory is decided by a three-man sprint at the end. Mario De Clercq proves he is faster than Sven Nys and Ben Berden.
[6.2.2000] Richard Groenendaal wins the Superprestige race in Harnes, France, celebrating the victory in his new rainbow jersey. It’s a sweep of the weekend’s races by the Dutch champion.
[5.2.2000] After his great success last week in Sint-Michielsgestel, Richard Groenendaal sports his new World Champion jersey and is victorious in Pijnacker Netherlands. The Dutchman wins ahead of Adrie Van der Poel and Daniele Pontoni.
[5.2.2000] Six days after the drama in Sint-Michielsgestel, Belgian champion Sven Nys wins the Krawatencross in Lille Belgium for the first time in his career. U23 World Champion Bart Wellens finishes second and takes over the overall lead of GvA-Trofee.
[30.1.2000 - 3:15 pm] In an interview after the race, Sven Nys admits that there was a team order from the Rabobank racing team and he had instructions to let Groenendaal drive. A decision that still continues to haunt the Belgian to this day.
[30.1.2000 - 3:10 pm] Lots of emotions at the award ceremony. While Richard Groenendaal is happy about his first world title, the tears of disappointment are flowing from both Mario De Clercq and Sven Nys.
[30.1.2000 - 3:05 pm] Mario De Clercq takes second. Sven Nys makes no effort to fight his compatriot for the silver. The approximately 10,000 Belgian fans at the track have found their bogeyman in Nys.
[30.1.2000 - 3:00 pm] Dutch Victory! What a race for 28-year-old Richard Groenendaal. The Dutchman drives the entire race solo from the front and crowns himself new world champion in his hometown.
[30.1.2000 - 2:50 pm] Laaste Ronde. Richard Groenendaal goes into the final lap. For De Clercq and Nys it is status quo, they sit at 50 seconds in the battle for silver and bronze.
[30.1.2000 - 2:45 pm] With two laps to go, Mario De Clercq loses his calm and screams at his compatriot Nys on the home stretch asking him to finally cooperate.
[30.1.2000 - 2:40 pm] The title should go to Groenendaal, barring a crash or mechanical problem. The Dutchman is untouchable. In the chase, meanwhile, Adrie Van der Poel must let the two Belgians go.
[30.1.2000 - 2:35 pm] 3 laps to go and the race situation remains unchanged. Groenendaal leads while the among the pursuers De Clercq must do the work alone. Nys & Van der Poel only sit on the rear wheel of the defending champion. 51 seconds is the gap.
[30.1.2000 - 2:30 pm] Slowly the team tactics of Rabobank become clear. Sven Nys has some quick conversation with Adrie Van der Poel in the chase group, and a short time later, the Belgian attacks. But De Clercq closes the gap with Van der Poel on the rear wheel.
[30.1.2000 - 2:25 pm] Three laps have been ridden and Groenendaal remains solo. He is 43 seconds ahead of De Clercq, Nys, Van der Poel and De Vos.
[30.1.2000 - 2:20 pm] De Clercq makes pace with the pursuers but gets no support. Another Rabobank rider, Adrie Van der Poel, has made the connection to the group, but he is not also interested in working with De Clercq.
