Russia apparently delays this week's New START Treaty talks. The meetings were supposed to focus on reestablishing joint inspections of US-Russia nukes stalled amid the fallout over Ukraine. Also, a baby step toward negotiating whatever comes next when New START sunsets in 2026.

@mfa_russia officially confirmed to #RIA that Cairo consultations on #NewSTART are postponed

And here Ukraine’s presidential advisor with insights on the contours of the deal: separate agreements by the UN/Turkey with Moscow and Kyiv.

Regarding the Istanbul agreement "on the export of 🇺🇦 grain". Previously. 1. Ukraine does not sign any documents with Russia. We sign an agreement with Turkey and the UN and undertake obligations to them. Russia signs a mirror agreement with Turkey and the UN. 1/2

A UN/Turkey-brokered deal to free up Russian and Ukrainian grain and fertilizers looks more and more like a done deal. Kremlin confirms its Defense Minister is headed to Istanbul for a signing ceremony later today. Our preview from ⁦@MorningEditionnpr.org/2022/07/22/111…

#BrittneyGriner enters the courtroom. I’m told the defense will present character witnesses today — including from a former Russian teammate and manager.

Trial of #BrittneyGriner on drug charges to resume outside Moscow today — a week after BG pled guilty to unintentionally violating Russian law in Feb. Hearing running late but expect defense to present her story in more detail. Her lawyer tells me “zero chance” of verdict today.

Moscow Monsoon.

US Embassy’s Elizabeth Rood confirms she delivered letter from President Biden to #BrittneyGriner at trial in Moscow today. My best guess from inside the courtroom: it played a role in Griner’s decision to make her guilty plea. Russia says no prisoner swap until after verdict.
