Are we aiming to be last of all and servant of all? Or do we have in mind a different notion of greatness than the one preached by Jesus?

Make Christianity Great Again. We honor and thank God for a bold president.

I just heard that my paper, "Foundational Grounding and Four Sources of Contingency," has been accepted by Faith & Philosophy. This is a kind of companion to my forthcoming JAPA paper, "Metaphysical Rationalism Requires Grounding Indeterminism." Summary 🧵

A reminder for my fellow Christians: Jesus loves all the people you hate.

“the rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and the men of high position exercise power over them. It must not be like that among you…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” Matt 20:25–26

There have been considerable efforts from Evangelical leaders to convince Christians there is something sinful about exercising their political power through their vote. Now we see result. This is depriving nation of salt and light in the public sphere. justthenews.com/nation/religio…

After a long period of careful reflection, I've decided a certain heretical form of Christianity might be true. The full story is in this interview. youtube.com/watch?v=vM_Thg…

I can think of 10 different Christians I've seen interviewed, and I wish I could show them how they’re being treated like a 'nice idiot' and ask them to leave the interview

Typical comment when I'm interviewed on an atheist YouTube channel: "Seems like a nice guy. Too bad he's brainwashed."

If all religions are equally good paths to God, why do we still memorialize martyrs (like Sts. Cornelius and Cyprian)? Weren’t they foolish to sacrifice their lives for a mere verbal difference?

coptic theist Reposted

This is true, & I defended something like it at some length in the debate book (routledge.com/Is-There-a-God…). We needn't hold (& I don't hold) that all religions are equally good/correct/etc. But we should hold that all of them can (& often do) play a role in a person's path to God.

If you reject what Francis is saying here, then arguments from religious diversity become a lot more powerful

People keep saying "but his audience is people who only know fundamentalist Biblical interpretation." Yeah and? All he's done is to replace it with a kind of biblicism that is no less fundamentalist in its approach to the Bible for all its historicism

I find Dan McClellan and his type to be so annoying. Why are you acting like historical criticism is edgy. Are we in Germany in 1814. Are you meeting Schleiermacher for lunch today

I’m delighted to introduce you to my new book, The Challenge of Acts. Acts poses a question of what the kingdom of God looks like when meeting up with the authority structures of this world. That is the challenge of Acts. I encourage you to take a look.

"Some elders came to see Abba Poimen to ask him, 'If we see some brothers dozing in the congregation, do you want us to reprove them so that they stay awake?' He said to them, 'For my part, when I see a brother dozing, I lay his head on my lap and let him rest.'" - Sayings of the…

Sometimes church makes me cry. It stresses out 1 of my kids, so I try to keep my composure, but sometimes I can't. Today I thought I'd say something about why-because it's not just me. (a🧵) This isn't about church-hurt. It's about what church sometimes is for the hurting. 1/

A wonderful teacher and pastor May he rest in peace and rise in glory

I’m desperately sad to learn of the death earlier today of my good friend Fr Gerald O’Collins SJ. He preached at my first Mass in November 2021 and did so much to nurture me as a priest. I shall miss him very much indeed. May choirs of angels sing him to his rest.

The possibility of doing this sort of thing rests on a deep faith, an assurance that there's a divine message for us there. Conversely, the urge to eliminate the tensions, puzzles, & paradoxes is indicative of insecurity.

The author of Hebrews spends so much time dwelling on details of OT texts—esp how Psalms treats earlier narratives—that seem to make little sense, focusing on odd word choices or features of the narrative to find its spiritual depth.

coptic theist Reposted

This kind of patient meditation—turning the puzzling text(s) over on all sides—is very common among Jewish interpreters, and also in the Greek Fathers (e.g., Chrysostom). The NT epistle to the Hebrews is also a great example.

The habit of thought I am most trying to unlearn from my Evangelical background is seeing tensions, puzzles, & paradoxes in the Bible as threats to be eliminated. There is much more to be learned from dwelling & meditating on these than from getting rid of them.
