This is a very useful and considered thread. It does make me terribly sad that it is information that still requires sharing.

At the risk of having my DMs blow up with messages, I'm looking for some guests for @einstein_agogo on @3RRRFM to round out the calendar until the end of the year. Specifically, PhDs, EMCRs in STEM are most welcome. Give me a yell, in particular if you have never done radio…

Three types of supervisors: Type 1: I was mistreated, so I will mistreat my students. Type 2: I was mistreated, and I didn’t like it, so I won't do the same. Type 3: I was treated well, so I will treat my students even better. What we learn from our experiences is up to us!

Eeek

Strong evidence showing that getting a PhD is extremely bad for your mental health. A new paper uses Swedish medical records and matches them to the full population of PhD students for which the authors could get gender and birth year data from 2006 to 2017. After some exclusion…

Dear orgs that run “young scientist” awards that are supposed to promote the interests of scientists early in their science CAREER: Stop making eligibility based on AGE. Not all ECRs are in a position to start our PhDs in our 20s! Young scientist ≠ under 30. 🙄😡😔

🤢🤢🤢 Stop it. Don’t do this…ever. I’m sorry Laura. It’s not acceptable. It is gross. What a horrible thing to have to experience. But thank you for calling it out. 🙏🏻

After giving a talk at a conference recently, I received an email from an unfamiliar senior professor in the audience remarking that my “look has extremely improved over the years” from “nerdy lab mouse” to “a touch of upper class.” 1/4

I’ve seen many PhD students struggle to make ends meet, skipping meals to save 💰 while researching full time. Would you consider helping to raise their voices and #raisethestipend?

Higher degree by research students in Australia work full-time hours but receive $11.7k below the minimum wage. The Universities Accord recommended that the higher degree by research stipend should be increased to support junior researchers, we are campaigning for that to happen!
