CIVIC SPACE "The public arena in which citizens can freely intervene, organise themselves...defending their interests, values, and identities; to claim their rights; to influence public policy and to call power holders to account." Bossuyt, J. and Ronceray, M. (2020)

#SADC should intervene to save #Mozambique from collapse. Respecting people’s rights matters. The notion of power as an end in itself and therefore at any cost should be abandoned. #CivicSpaceMatters #HumanRightsMatters #DemocracyMatters

#Mozambique: UN experts call for an immediate end to post-election violence & repression of journalists, lawyers, #HumanRights defenders & protesters, urging proper investigation and accountability for perpetrators. ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

Digital rights are human rights The right to internet is a fundamental human right #Mozambique #ProtectOnLineCivicSpace

Social media shutdown just few minutes ago. It’s now Day 14 of restrictions So, the reason why Frelimo kept the internet on today is because they wanted people to enter the city, get their location and shoot. Very predictable #FreeMozambique #MozambiqueElections

Mozambique🇲🇿 🗣️ Join us for a crucial X Space discussion: "What should global action and solidarity look like in the context of the ongoing crisis in #Mozambique.” 🌍 📅 Today at 6 PM CAT As Mozambique faces unrest and protests following recent elections, the call for…

Internet shutdown by #Mozambique in the context of contested elections and post elections violence is an attack of incalculable proportion on the right to freedom of expression including receiving and imparting information #protectcivicspace #protectdigitalrights

⚠️ Update: Traffic data show #Mozambique has emerged from a third day of curfew-style mobile internet blackouts. However, social media platforms remain restricted as authorities continue to impose measures to curtail protests over disputed election results

Looks like #Zimbabwe as Chair of SADC will host a SADC Heads of State Summit to discuss the developments in #Mozambique. Let us hope that voices of leading civil society actors such as @adriano_nuvunga @SAHRDNetwork will be heard ahead of the extraordinary summit of @SADC_News

Zimbabwe is to host an Extra-Ordinary SADC Heads of State Summit, 16-20 Nov, to discuss “emerging issues of regional significance”. Additionally, the meeting will also be briefed on elections in the region. Over the past year, SADC leaders have held 4 Extra-Ordinary Summits

Independent and impartial courts are a prerequisite for separation of powers and effective checks and balances President Ruto is offside in #Kenya with all due respect and must leave the courts alone. If courts lose their independence and impartiality, that threatens #civicspace

President Ruto has renewed his attacks on the courts, which he blames for stalling his administration's policies. nation.africa/kenya/news/rut…

Dictatorship thrives when the people are forced not to see, hear or speak against evil. That is why authoritarian systems shut down internet. Digital rights are human rights. #Mozambique must restore internet forthwith and cease state violence against unarmed civilians.

Day 6 of Social media shutdown in #Mozambique 🇲🇿 Timeline: 25 October- 1st Total internet shutdown 🛜 26 October- 2 November- Social media Shutdown 3 November- 2nd Total Internet Shutdown 🛜 4 November- Back to social media shutdown (Day 6)

140 days in jail for exercising civic space rights in #Zimbabwe. What an unnecessary and absolute waste of public resources by a country that is unable to offer key public services to its population That arbitrary arrests occurred as a run up to @SADC_News Summit is a shame

DAY 140🗓️ Opposition leader Jameson Timba and 64 Citizens Coalition for Change activists, who were arrested on 16 June 2024 after they had gathered at Timba’s house to commemorate the International Day of the African Child, have now spent 140 days in detention. #FreeThemNow!

Thanks Sishuwa for this important narration and analysis. Journalism and pro democracy activism must never be criminalised! It is a threat of incalculable proportion on civic space and retards development #Zambia #CivicSpace

The pretrial and prolonged detention of investigative journalist Thomas Zyambo By Sishuwa Sishuwa Today marks exactly two weeks since Thomas Allan Zgambo, an investigative journalist who has been exposing corruption and bad governance in Zambia under President Hichilema, was…

We encourage #Zambia not to waste precious, finite resources and energy criminalising journalism. Totally unnecessary. #ProtectCivicSpace #ProtectMediaSpace #ProtectJournalism

Zambian authorities must immediately drop all charges against journalist Thomas Zgambo and stop targeting him. Zgambo was arrested 16 Oct while eating at a mall and charged with criminal defamation. Authorities released him yesterday on bail. Journalism is not a crime!

That’s not a very honest input my friend! Mrs Nyemba is a respected lawyer in and outside Zim. This is why it is shocking to hear her speak like that because it’s out of character!

You can see the arrogance and disdain on her ugly face. She's got no heart, no empathy and is full of utter evil. This woman has no place being perm sec of justice. She's behaving like a street woman who sells her body for money.... even those women have dignity this cow here.

Forgive her She knows not the sizes & shapes of things women put in their mouths these days

I thought she came from a very professional background? If this is what joining a Zim government does to a person, then God help us!
