Begrudgingly posted this from work, just for anyone wondering if I succumbed to temptation. Was doing an archive search for an old ad for the pub and happened upon something far more interesting. Keep an eye out for this keystone at the entrance, next time you pass the pub!
A ghost sign starts to reveal itself as modern paints start to fall off the side of Cumiskeys. Come for the the 4.70 Beamish, stay for the drinking history.

With the official announcement that the Dublin Conservative Club (DCC) is to close after 141 years, here are two articles from the Evening Herald (08 June '49) and Irish Independent (03 Jan '51) when the club was based at 38 York St. Sam.

RIP Pól, he was a good friend of CHTM! from the very start and left over 400 comments on the blog from 2010 to 2023. He had a genuine love and appreciation of Dublin's history. Sam.

Some recent finds. A 1959 ad for the Asia Chinese Restaurant, Lower Leeson St., which was the first Chinese restaurant in Dublin (estd. 1957). Also a 1964 ad for the Luna Chinese Restaurant, Upper O'Connell St, which opened in the late 1950s. More: comeheretome.com/2012/07/25/dub… Sam.
Memorial notices were placed in the Irish Times as late as 1967 for RIC District Inspector Swanzy who was implicated in the murder of Tomás Mac Curtain (Lord Mayor of Cork) in March 1920. Transferred to Lisburn, he was tracked down by the IRA and shot in Aug of the same year. Sam
Article published in the Sunday Pictorial (30 Sep. 1962) just one year and six months before the death of Brendan Behan aged 41 of fatty degeneration of the liver as a result of alcoholism and diabetes. Sam.
Looking for an up-to-date contact address or phone number for Christy 'Bronco' Dunne Jr. if anyone can help. It's regarding a history project. Have already tried two different mobile numbers but they're disconnected. Thanks, Sam. Photo credit: Padraig O'Reilly - The Sun Dublin
Original sign that hung outside The Wolfe Tone pub on the corner of Jervis and Mary street. Anyone have any memories of this pub? The Jervis shopping centre now occupies this corner. The sign is available for purchase.
New blog article! Research shows that 86/116 of Fianna Fáil TDs (elected 1927-32) were pension or medal applicants for 1916-23 service. #MSPCR16 incl. files of 31 FF TDs released to public for first time. @dfarchives @theirishstory @electionlit Link militarypensions.wordpress.com/2024/06/05/fia…
Solidarity with all the families and their long struggle for justice.
Verdicts of unlawful killing have been returned at the Stardust inquests into the deaths of the 48 people in the 1981 nightclub fire. The families in court today cheered and applauded as the verdict was read out rte.ie/news/stardust/…
Dear #Dublin friends, does anyone recognise this house? Irish Independent, 19 September 1942.
35 years ago today, the Evening Herald published a list of Dublin's 100 best pubs. While there's some odd categorisation, and a pub I can't even place, it has stood up to time better than many newer equivalents everypubindublin.blogspot.com/2024/03/1989s-…
