After the past few days of seeing so much discourse re: small shops, if you plan to outsource production - × research & get to know ur factory × watch livestreams of tours × read up on their current certifications × pay to have a nonaffiliated party visit factory for inspection
I'm glad artists are discussing the ethics of where they source products like plushies and keychains. But who is making your paints and brushes? Who is making your camera and computer? What if there is no ethical art making under capitalism?
I have manufactured in both China and Japan and can say that the country you manufacture in does not automatically make it higher quality or more ethical. China has had many reforms to their working conditions and is no longer considered a “cheap” place to produce -

Idk why the discourse around small businesses affected by the tariffs is centered around people dunking on plushie makers. This will affect everyone including the people who hand make their products here. The price of fabric is about to skyrocket exponentially
I think there’s space to discuss overconsumption in fandom space but like… fan merchandise is generally made in quantities equal to demand. If someone does a preorder run, odds are there isn’t a warehouse of extra stock… it’s all going to people who bought it.

ngl i think artists should think more about the labor conditions of the people they outsource their plastic trinkets and custom manufactured plush to. especially if youre vocal of the ethics and environmental impact of AI art.
People will stuff their closets with SHEIN and temu and pack their shelves with funko pops but a independent artist uses factories to produce high quality products on a fairly small scale that ARENT ending up in dumps and suddenly they’re the enemy
