“Are you now or have you ever been a supporter of the Palestinian people?”
I’ve spent much of the last weeks thinking about how we relate to one another as students, educators & professionals. Like many, I am disturbed by systematic efforts to silence pro-Palestinian politics in the name of safety. Some tentative thoughts about how such claims work.🧵
Today, we're launching the Palestine Legal Referral Service: a national legal referral service of 50+ lawyers across Canada connecting individuals expressing support for Palestine and Palestinians with experienced legal counsel. palestinelegalreferral.ca
“If I've learned anything in the last two weeks, it is that many in the profession, rather, are unfit to educate and mentor these brave students who are calling out injustice, which is actually a time-honoured tradition of legal practice.” @JoshuaSealy 🔥 lawtimesnews.com/news/general/i…
Statement from the @IndJewishVoices Toronto & York Region Legal Committee: "Protecting Freedom of Expression, Thought, and Speech" calling on @YorkUniversity and @LincAlexLawTMU "to retract their statements condemning student groups" for supporting 🇵🇸 secure.ijvcanada.org/index.php?q=ci…
We’ve heard from those afraid of reprisals for supporting Palestinian human rights or afraid that their stance will be assumed/examined due to their ethnicity/religion. To those who’ve been silenced, harassed or discriminated against: we support you & proudly call you colleagues.
CLAIHR signed this letter condemning the conflation of critiques of Israel’s historic & ongoing human rights violations w/ antisemitism. To be clear, we also condemn Hamas’s human rights violations & the rise in antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism & all racism.

It could. In most jurisdictions in Canada, discrimination on the basis of “political belief” (or some variation) is prohibited. That’s because political beliefs shouldn’t be used to create barriers to people’s ability to participate fully and equally in society.
If someone announces an intent to discriminate on the basis of pro-Palestinian speech, could that violate a provision like s.13? If someone is discriminated against in employment, or on campus, for lawful expression, could that constitute a violation of human rights legislation?
🧵We now look back with shame at the witch hunts and systemic employment discrimination endured by Communists and LGBTQ+ people in the 1950s and 1960s.
As a Canadian human rights scholar working abroad I’m proud to support this letter in defence of lawyers, academics and students back home speaking up for human rights and justice for Palestine. #CeasefireNOW

Proud signatory of the Open Letter 🤚🏻 “A failure of those of us in the legal profession to voice our opposition to [the new McCarthyism] will only accelerate the erosion of the very protections that make dissent – and therefore democracy – possible.” docs.google.com/document/d/e/2…

We now have 11 organizations, including @bccla @CanArabLaw @CLAIHR @pivotlegal @LCPal_ca @salc_bc and 650 lawyers, legal workers, and academics who are standing up against censure from our colleagues for speaking out in solidarity with Palestinians. docs.google.com/document/d/e/2…
