Last year, Washington state enacted a wealth tax on capital gains profits of the richest .2%. It was fought tooth and nail by billionaire-funded groups & passed by one vote. In one year, it's raised $850 million for child care & school construction—triple what was expected. 🧵

Seeing people call bills protecting the bodily autonomy of people who can give birth as well as ensuring gender affirming is available to those who need it "hyperpartisan" gives me a headache.

Oregonians said 🗣️ “FIND OUT, Republicans!” Banning state senators from running again for unexcused absences was not on my BINGO card but I’ll take this unexpected win for Oregon, well done voters! Now enforce it 👏👏

Consultation and collaboration are imperative to telling stories like this in a good way. If they weren’t intentional in their approach to work with Indigenous folx & community I doubt it would have been the same calibre of film or received the 9 minute standing ovation it did.

It just feels so utterly hopeless. I know that queers & feminists in China know how to work a loophole, a cat door, a hairline fracture, a whisper, a metaphor, but soon that's too subtle and quiet to reach the people who need it. A secret handshake can't replace a lighthouse.

this is exactly what it is so much of the economy is based on work done by exploited neurodivergents and if all of us actually knew who we were & what we’re capable of? that’s where we’re going—together

The Center’s closure is another gut punch for China’s beleaguered LGBTQ movement. Shanghai Pride & LGBT Rights Advocacy China closed in 2021 under pressure from authorities cnn.com/2021/07/09/chi…; apnews.com/article/techno…. While not officially closed, many orgs are inactive or...

The Center also focused on developing LGBTQ-affirming health professionals so LGBT ppl could find appropriate care (rather than, for eg, encounter a therapist who would push them to pursue conversion therapy). English-language state media often highlighted the Center's work. 3/5

Due to political sensitivity, LGBTQ-related research is very limited in China. When times were better, the Center was able to work w/ forward-looking scholars to conduct large surveys, which have since been cited in countless media & academic articles. A few examples: 2/5

The Beijing LGBT Center announced its closure today. Founded in 2008, the Center was a vibrant community space & a groundbreaking advocacy organization. Their team spearheaded pioneering research, and built networks of LGBTQ-affirming health & business professionals. 1/5

I haven’t talked about it much here, but the employees at Powell’s Books (yes, where I work) are fighting for a living wage and better healthcare. Powell’s isn’t keen on giving us either. We’re asking folks to read, sign, and share this petition 💖 bit.ly/tell-powells
