Quite the purchase from Tortoise (assuming it happens)
EXCLUSIVE: Guardian Media Group is in exclusive talks to sell The Observer, the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper, to Tortoise Media, a news start-up founded five years ago, in a deal which would further reshape the British national newspaper market. Full story on @SkyNews soon.
Just finished the Price of Life by @jennykleeman . Great read. The chapters on the market price of ransom demands and effective altruism are particularly enlightening (and disturbing).
Great quote about Jimmy Anderson from Kraigg Brathwaite: "He is a legend of the game. I won't miss him at all!"
🚨 THE NEW CABINET 🚨 The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has appointed his cabinet. This new cabinet marks a historic moment in British politics, with a record number of state-educated Ministers and the lowest proportion of privately educated Ministers since 1945 🧵👇
The other way of looking at this is since 1835, two governments have won more seats: - Blair in 1997 (418 seats) - Baldwin in 1931 (470 seats)
Prime Ministers who have won a higher share of the vote than Keir Starmer: Johnson (2019) May (2017) Cameron (2015) Cameron (2010) Blair (2005) Blair (2001) Blair (1997) Major (1992) Thatcher (1987) Thatcher (1983) Thatcher (1979) Wilson (1974) Wilson (1974) Heath (1970)
Election campaign called in the rain, and looks like the result will be called in the rain. Tomorrow we shall see if Starmer has a better plan for doing a speech when it's hammering it down - than just standing there getting wet. #GeneralElection2024
Such a weird attack ad. Basically saying the Tories are going to lose so badly they’ll be out for at least 10 years. It’s probably bang on factually, but strange choice of attack ad to say you’re utterly hopeless. #GeneralElection24
Good to see right wing commentators whole heartedly supporting Proportional Representation. #GeneraElection
Tricky, if the Tories do come third in the national share of the vote the BBC will be in a very difficult position.
We’re at the badly photoshopped hat stage of the campaign already?
That is a shame. Though the days of the tube being covered in copies of thelondonpaper, London Lite and the Evening Standard seem a long time ago.
The Evening Standard intends to go from a daily print schedule to weekly, its directors have told staff. The Lebedev title, which lacks an NUJ chapel, is asking staff to nominate representatives who can consult on the changes, including possible layoffs. pressgazette.co.uk/publishers/nat…
Comedy comms disaster Sunak doing more campaigning than Starmer is the best thing Labour could hope for.
Tories questioning where Starmer is today... with what appears to be a dig about his age... "understandable that he may be weary"... Senior Conservative campaign source: "Yesterday the PM hit the campaign trail two hours before Sir Keir surfaced. Today there is no sign of…
Sunak is off to deliver tea to Boston tomorrow
On a visit to the Titanic Quarter today, I asked the Prime Minister if he is captaining a sinking ship going into this election @BelfastLive
This is so weird. Starner literally faces Sunak every week on TV at PMQs. If this is the best angle the Tories have got, they are really in deep deep trouble. And they know it.
Sir Fear Starmer is the knight that won't fight. He should grow a backbone and commit to debating the Prime Minister face to face.
Interesting approach. Wonder if Sunak would turn up though? Believe he has missed the highest percentage of PMQs since pre-Thatcher at 12.5%. #generalelection
Exclusive The Tories are challenging Keir Starmer to debate Rishi Sunak **every week** in the campaign. That would be six TV debates, a record. Source close to Sunak tells me: “We will do as many as we can get. We will do one every week if he wants.” telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/…
Jimmy Anderson made his debut under Blair and could now play his last test on July 10th under Starmer. A test career of 8 PMs. #GeneralElection
Harry Redknapp presumably voting here #LocalElections
Voters at Milton Road Library get to experience the rare sight of voting from the back of a car as we've had problems getting into the building … hopefully we'll be in soon but for now our polling staff are doing a great job ensuring early voters can still cast their vote!
Turn on @bbc5live, it’s running its 152nd story on vapes this year. Turn off @bbc5live I think they should look into their own addiction to vape stories.
Looking forward to Guido catching up with posting all the meetings Tories have had with donors. Should fill up his content calendar till 2067.
And two weeks after making the donation Starmer and Reeves met in private at a Bloomberg hosted event for their fund manager clients. Cash for access.
At Ruth Perry’s inquest an Ofsted inspector’s evidence was that more often than not headteachers would cry during during final feedback meetings. The inquest found the manner of the inspection contributed to Ruth’s death. We are all entitled to dignity at work.
