No matter what anyone says, just SHOW UP and DO THE WORK. From page 176 of my book, “The Power of Positive Leadership.”
Unfortunately, not every coach is good. There’re bad ones who cause lasting damage to kids. But there’re mean people everywhere. You can’t snatch your child away from every bad situation. What can you do? TALK to your child. Combat a bad coach’s influence with honest discussions!
Athletes: Practice with Purpose. Before you get back on the field on this Monday, take 56 seconds and watch.
Can I retweet this over and over again ?
At @Sportsnet, we have the privilege of working with some exceptional people. It’s an honour for me to be alongside @CassieCampbell, who I think is one of the sharpest hockey minds I’ve ever encountered. Our exchange on #Habs hiring Marie-Philip Poulin:
COACHES: Just because we have "good kids" doesn't mean our team's leadership is strong. Good kids still need to be trained, equipped, taught, and shown how to use their qualities to impact the team and their teammates. We can't assume our kids know how to be positive leaders.
Understand that having a title doesn’t & won’t ever make you a great leader. You don’t need a label or a title to be a great leader. To be a leader one must be able to get & give respect, trust & honesty. If you can serve, influence & have an impact on others, you're a leader!
Great message for coaches of all levels, especially those coaching young athletes
Coaches: This post season, the 1st question that must be answered if we want to improve our players motivation is, “What do I/WE as a staff need to do differently for ME/US to love MY/OUR job?” We cant expect our players to be passionate athletes if we are not passionate coaches!
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Katie Meyer. Mental health is a deeply important issue that isn't addressed enough. If you are having suicidal thoughts, we encourage you to contact National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, available 24 hours a day at 1-800-273-8255
Great teams celebrate plays that win games (charges drawn, loose balls, extra pass, big rebounds, multiple defensive efforts, extra effort plays, etc.) Average teams celebrate the cool plays (someone gets crossed/falls down, dunks, 6 dribble iso step backs, flashy passes, etc.)
COACHES: Be sure that you care more about the person than you care about the player.
When teams of similar talent compete against each other, the difference will be the intangibles. The competitive advantage will often go to the team with the stronger culture. That team believes in each other more, handles adversity better, and understands the little things!
It simply doesn't matter what level these comments happen at, whether the Olympics or OUA, which might I add is often the same. Just inexcusable and I would hope that the @nulakers take a long, hard look at how this impacts athletes and those in sport who aren't men.
Very well said. It is too bad that is not a requirement for all coaches in minor sports.
Players respect coaches who: Practice what they preach Develop players as leaders Lead by example Empower players Spend time getting to know players Listen Fuel players’ motivation Teach sports & life Help players find their purpose Always tell players the truth Communicate Care
If you have a former coach who you can still call, Snap, Facebook, text, FaceTime, etc. then you had a coach who put you first & created lifelong, caring relationships with players. That isn’t always the case, so consider yourself lucky & keep those relationships close to heart!
Champions aren’t champions because they just do more on their own. It’s because they were willing to accept coaching, instruction & support to be their BEST. Nobody gets to the top alone. ~ via @CoachJonBeck
Don’t be a detriment to your team by being a bad teammate. Good teammates work hard & encourage hard work in others. They increase morale, listen well, lead by example, inspire with a great attitude, give 100%, are energetic/coachable & always promote the team. Be that teammate!
