Volunteers are searching for an invasive species of bug which poses a threat to plane trees lining streets and parks in London. The Woodland Trust says the plane lace bug, native to North America, has been spotted in the UK for the first time in 18 years. bbc.in/3ZOIzrK

The Woodland Trust: 49% garden at RHS Tatton. The garden aims to highlight the estimated 49% of trees outside of woods lost since 1850. The garden uses only UK grown trees, through our UKISG scheme. A triple award winning garden, showing the best of UK grown. @WoodlandTrust

Help #ScotlandsRainforest this #INNSWeek! Spread the word about the problem of Rhododendron ponticum, and make sure you’re not spreading it yourself! Don’t buy it, and if you see it for sale, tell your garden centre why it’s such a threat. 📷 Gordon Rothero

Finding rhododendron bushes is crucial to controlling its spread. If you see Rhododendron ponticum growing in a remote area, report it through iRecord or get in touch with local rangers/wardens. #INNSWeek. 📷 P Philpot

Rhododendron ponticum is a problem in #ScotlandsRainforest because it spreads really fast – mature plants can produce millions of seeds! As it grows it starts to smother out all other vegetation and can eventually be the only plant left. #INNSWeek @ASRainforest 📷 Andy Robinson

Whilst it may look pretty, DO NOT PLANT #Rhododendron ponticum in your garden. It will quickly spread into your local environment where it creates long lasting problems. (There are 100s of other species that would make better garden plants.🙂 ) #INNSWeek 🧵 2/2

🌍Warmer temperatures due to #ClimateChange means introduced pests and diseases of our native trees are more likely to become established. 🌳Introduced #TreeDiseases such as #AshDieback and #DutchElmDisease cause widespread losses of trees across the UK. #PlantHealthWeek 🧵

Did you know rhododendron ponticumis is an invasive species? While you can still buy seeds, we'd encourage you not to for the sake of both your garden and local wildlife! Opt for native shrubs and flowers instead like these 👉kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/actions/how-ma… 📷 Laura Cronin
