{fitzRoy} 1.5.0 has been released on CRAN. Many thanks to @random_effects for a mountain of work optimising code and squashing bugs over the last few weeks! Read about the changes here plussixoneblog.com/posts/2024-07-…
I've collated the publicly Brownlow model predictions + some private ones. Will do a write-up tomorrow with the results and discuss the big surprises. If you have a model, hit me up in DMs/comments! Good luck! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d… @MatterOfStats @ChewTheStat @WheeloRatings

Feelin Fuzzy? @OSPpatrick and I work through identifying players using fuzzy joins to standardize names of sports ball players against that in your database. We use two different techniques, using base #rstats agrep and #tidyverse -esq {fuzzyjoin}! Bit.ly/TidyX_Ep127
finally AFL analytics moving forward

Great important work being done here! Why isn't the AFL running its own competition - why is it up to volunteers?
Had lots of fun doing this piece on the team behind @aflwfantasy - why they're dedicating hours of volunteer time to grow fan engagement in #AFLW and to improve conditions for #womeninsport more broadly. #aflwfantasy #FantasyFootball abc.net.au/news/2022-09-2… via @ABCaustralia

@plusSixOneblog the package got mentioned in my uni class (not formally, just when bantering with the tutor)
This is great content
Fun thing. I’m going to be doing a fortnightly piece for @abcsport this #AFLW season. Here is the first - players to watch. abc.net.au/news/2022-08-2…

AFL stats fans wanting stats reminds me of the classic image below Also a reminder of how poor the league treats it's fans and how reliant a billion dollar industry is on volunteers
Maybe if data was open more "official sources" would write about better things more often
I guess poor imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Ok folks, I'm going to try out Twitch. I'll be streaming some coding because I am bored. Please let me know if the stream stays on rstudio and if my microphone isn't terrible.
CD: We have turned this binary variable {Goal | Not-Goal} into a continuous value Statisticians: Bravo! Less noise in this metric CD: Now we will dichotomise the totals into this bigger binary variable {Win | Loss} S: Wait … what?! NO!
“Expected scores” is a concept invented by Champion Data, an alternative reality in which there’s a statistical likelihood that a goal, behind or miss will be scored from a particular position. In this parallel universe, Richmond are equal with Geelong. theage.com.au/sport/afl/shou…
This is a good read forwarding to all north supporting friends

It appears to be only an issue post game, with MG matching 100% on both CD and the API during live matches, but something happens in the review that means the MG stat never gets the final update from CD. 2/3
