Thank you @radleybalko for the awesome article.
New from me: A woman who works as a paralegal and advocate for indigent defendants was scolded by a judge, then barred from the courthouse. Later the same day, she was arrested for a minor traffic violation, held for several hours, and made to walk home. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…
A huge highlight for Mano Amiga with every Lost River Film Fest is the festival also serves as a statewide reunion for many of our partners in struggle across the Lone Star State!
Law makers base their legislation on large metropolitan areas of Texas. Magistrates are not required to be lawyers or any sort of specialized education just win the election in rural Texas Bubba is elected as a Justice of the Peace. Dangerous situation!
I'm so sorry this happened to you @annajustuspd Fitting that this story dropped the same day Hays County announced its getting a public defenders office. Those fighting against vigorous holistic public defense for the poor are losing. Keep pushing!

Mean while importing thousands of Afganistán refugies….. Amanda @FairDefense has been in the trenches fighting for these survivors since day one.
Criminal defense lawyer Kathryn Dyer (R) says up to 200 migrants recently arrested for trespassing 'have never spoken to an atty' Amanda Woog of TX Fair Defense Project says @GregAbbott_TX's border plan 'brazenly coopts' justice system 'to fuel the governor's campaign.' #txlege
We love our buddies @ManoAmigaSM! Great work!
🚨🚨VICTORY ALERT🚨🚨 HAYS COUNTY IS GETTING A PUBLIC DEFENDER OFFICE!🎉 After 3-year-long campaign led by Mano Amiga to push for Public Defender Office, Hays County Commissioners Court votes unanimously during August 24 budget workshop to allocate $5 million for it’s creation!
This is a good example of our culture's desensitization to the most profound injustices of the authoritarian punishment bureaucracy. To do this, Governor needs thousands of officers, prosecutors, retired judges, jail guards, aides, bureaucrats, etc... Everyone goes along.
Thank you @GoldieVanzandt for sharing Jerome's story. We are inspired by your advocacy and courage.
The money bail system holds people in need of mental health care hostage — simply because they cannot afford to buy their way out of jail. Jerome VanZandt's story is all too common. It's past time for change. Thank you to @TxJailProject for sharing his story.
State lawmakers are not only ignoring Texans’ needs, they’re actively working to exclude our voices as they attack our civil rights. Earlier, the Texas Senate suspended rules requiring notice of a hearing and authorized legislators to skip certain hearings altogether. #TXlege
A hearing this weekend in the Texas Senate was among the most disappointing and unfair committee processes I’ve seen. It was impossible for the vast majority of Texans to take part. Watch this video to get a sense of what happened, then read on #txlege
