One of the biggest, most damaging traumas a child can suffer is to be in a classroom where they are not appropriately taught to read and are made to feel responsible for the failure of the educators. To suffer this year after year is unconscionable.

Today we celebrated Orton Gillingham sentence reading with a shaving cream explosion. Last week he couldn't read a CVC word and today he read a complete sentence.

In my years of reporting on reading, I haven’t met a teacher who didn’t want her/his students to be good readers. But I’ve met a lot of who didn’t know what cognitive scientists have figured out abt how reading comprehension works. Listen @EducatePodcast apmreports.org/episode/2020/0…

Trying to make OG as interactive as possible, but my student and I both agree we'd rather be doing this in person. @franbowman1

Tried out Jamboard with 2 kids for Order of Operations. While helping one student go through the steps on his board, I hear the other student ask Siri the answer to his problem. So I ask him if he could have used any of the strategies from school. "Um, no, Siri is right here."

Fifth graders wrote masterpiece sentences using details to help readers visualize our writing. One student said she likes writing now, while another said it was the best day ever. Thank you @franbowman1 for the great writing strategy. @MattCorner_BCPS @KelbaughKathy
