This has got to be one of the worst election results of this cycle. Beyond the sheer cruelty toward unhoused people, we've seen that tying governmentt revenue to criminalization can have disastrous consequences (i.e., Ferguson) & does nothing to solve underlying problems.

there's a concerted push to make clearing out homeless tent encampments non-negotiable (even when no affordable housing is available) and that push just scored a big win this week in Arizona

My paper on carceral seepage--my way of showing the violence of the carceral state and how it elicits racialized emotional responses--was published yesterday. This was not an easy paper to write and I will forever labor with that. academic.oup.com/socpro/advance…

1/4 Scholars' infatuation with human/social capital is due to academic training focusing on "inequality as categories" rather than *inequality as processes." And "inequality as processes" vary across socially constructed groups bc of history.

I really like this paper by @FenabaAddo and @SandyDarity and Samuel Meyer. I make a similar argument about poverty research and the overuse of human/social capital as explanations for Black-White inequality.

This @CritSoc minicon today (not so mini, actually) was just fantastic. Well over 100 engaged, activist scholars supporting and learning from each other. Highly recommend if there's ever a repeat- and I hope there is.

NYS, NYC, Chicago, DC… all failing at Vision Zero and seeing more BIPOC deaths because we lack political will to invest in infrastructure in communities of color, and rely instead on more enforcement/more fines and fees that cause more harm. nytimes.com/interactive/20…

Research into the spatial context of the criminal justice system has grown lately, but it faces challenges. In a new piece, @jt_simes, @john_majoreason, and I summarize the sub-field, critique its focus on large cities, and venture some recommendations.
