In mid-October, Oregon’s #ClarkGlacier was honored with a funeral and calls to protect the state’s often overlooked #glaciers. Read more here: bit.ly/2HFSVEa @GlaciersOregon #glacierfuneral #climagechange #Oregon #melting

A sad but important action on our parts

Some good discussion of the glacier funeral we held for the passing of Clark Glacier in Oregon blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2020/10/27/cla… #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateCrisis #climatestrike

Villard Glacier on North Sister, OR has more than 50 annual layers, meaning its ice dates back to the signing of the Clean Air Act and the creation of the EPA and NOAA in 1970. We have the laws and agencies to stop global warming on the books. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

Not sure how often one gets to make new discoveries these days, but finding an unknown glacier in your own back yard is pretty amazing!

We discovered an unmapped and unrecognized glacier the other day, adding to the size of Oregon's cryosphere. The @USGS shows bare rock on their maps! It's a real, moving glacier - name to come! #climatestrike #ClimateActionNow #ClimateChangeIsReal

Thayer Glacier on North Sister in Oregon has been a fixture of U.S. maps even before WWII and as recent as 2016 according to the U.S. Forest Service. The glacier is now gone. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming

This was some very fun and very sad fieldwork to conduct.

Lathrop Glacier was the southernmost glacier in Oregon on Mt. Thielsen after its discovery in the mid 1960's. Last week we documented that it is gone. Bare glacially polished bedrock where ice used to be. #climate #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming

In 1896, a glacier was observed on Mt. McLoughlin, making it the southernmost glacier in Oregon. It was gone by 1939, showing the degree of warming in Oregon at the end of the Little Ice Age - we could find now field evidence this glacier ever existed last week! #ClimateChange

These are the remains of "Jack" glacier on Three Fingered Jack in the Oregon high Cascades. The USGS never named or recognized the glacier despite it being <5 miles (<8 km) from U.S. Highway 20. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming

Check out Oregon Glacier Institute @glaciersoregon to follow the current effort by CSO ambassador @aaronjhartz to research the effects of climate change on Oregon’s glaciers 🏔 We’re all observers of change, let’s document it for future generations. 🙏🏻 #glaciers #snowscience

Some first observations from yesterday in the field on Middle Sister, Oregon #ClimateChangeIsReal #ClimateAction

Finding the nail in the coffin of an Oregon glacier - that bedrock ridge will cut Hayden Glacier on Middle Sister in half and hasten its demise! orglaciersinst.org/post/hayden-gl… #ClimateEmergency #ClimateChange

In 1885, the U.S.G.S. declared the Three Sisters volcanos in Oregon "as probably affording the most interesting field for glacial studies in the United States, with the exception of Alaska." 135 years later, its time to do just that! #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateCrisis

The Thayer glacier on North Sister created this moraine. Recent observations suggest there is not much ice left here. This summer the @GlaciersOregon will begin field work to identify which 'glaciers' are no longer glaciers. Please donate at orglaciersinst.org.
