Elif Irem Az's beautiful-yet-heartbreaking ethnographic poetry is featured this week in the Highlights section of the @AmAnthroJournal website, exploring the mining lives in the aftermath of a disaster. 📖 Read it here: americananthropologist.org/online-content… @LabSpecEth
Every now and then, one gets to chat with a friend about their book, after having watched them work through it for years, as I did with @aslizeng (@RUgenderstudies) on Violent Intimacies (@DukePress). Check it out on @NewBooksNetwork @NewBooksAnthro: newbooksnetwork.com/violent-intima…
This is old info, but worth re-highlighting: CUNY has signed an up-to $4m contract with a private security firm, which says it will combat Gaza solidarity demonstations' "non-permissive asymmetrical guerrilla warfare tactics" (???). The firm brags about training in Israel.
Facebook has just removed the information for our yearly held Hrant Dink Memorial Lecture. The algorithms probably put a ban on anything related to Palestine. Alternatively it is the work of some racist who can't bear Hrant Dink's memory. Please circulate this year's Lecture:
As CCNY students face felony burglary charges, we call on the PSC, CUNY's union, to push for all charges to be dropped; the PSC must also endorse the @cunygse's five demands––starting with divestment. You can pressure the union here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…
PLEASE SHARE: We are concerned that several CCNY students who have been arrested, predominantly students of color, have spent their 2nd night in jail and have yet to be arraigned. NY law requires arraignment within 24 hrs of arrest. We demand their prompt processing and release.
Can confirm from court support details. Columbia got charges lowered, released fairly quickly. CCNY arrestees were stuck in the backlog, charges not lowered, last releases weren’t until around 5pm today following legal threat.
New York City says it can’t afford to keep its libraries open on the weekends but it can afford to spend literally millions in one night in cop overtime pay to beat the shit out of undergrads sitting still on their own campus. That should infuriate everyone except fascist idiots.
Tents are up at Rutgers-Newark encampment! From the river to the sea, and on to New Jersey, Palestine will be free!
BUGWU member condemns the attacks on students at Columbia, CUNY, NYU, and Emerson. Shame on admin who sick police on peaceful students!
If you're available this morning and not headed to jail support for CUNY and Columbia people, turn out to Fordham's Lincoln Center campus to support New York City's newest Gaza Solidarity Encampment
The reporting from @WKCRFM is stunning. Students journalist doing war zone-like reporting from their own campus. It’s a heartbreaking listen, but also inspiring because they are pros who are holding back no punches about the gravity of the moment.
URGENT CALL TO ACTION: ALL OUT TO CCNY! NYPD SRG unit is on site and has just entered campus right next to the encampment. More cops arriving by the minute. We need numbers to defend the encampment NOW!
At CUNY. This is fascism btw.
While the media ignores them, students at community colleges ARE protesting genocide too. They have far fewer material resources to leverage but are just as important. I’ll flag them in this 🧵 as I learn about their efforts. #GazaSolidarityEncampment #CeasfireNOW
Community College of Denver joins #GazaSolidarityEncampment 📣📣📣 (I’ve been to this campus- it’s shared space with several universities, which is quite cool)
Please sign this petition for Immediate Protection for Prof. Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, the Palestinian scholar who was detained and interrogated recently by Israel. This is an official letter/petition that was crafted with her legal team. scholarsagainstwar.org/actions/immedi…
