Gov. Dunleavy has declared a disaster for the Western Alaska storm as the prospect of freeze-up adds urgency regarding damage assessment and repairs. By all accounts, the storm has so far been among the worst the region had experienced in many years. adn.com/alaska-news/ru…

My heart is with the western AK coastal communities, where a climate disaster is unfolding. Extreme storm surge, devastating flooding, homes floating away in the floods. I hope Alaskans and Americans come together to support these communities as they deal with this crisis.

The center of the storm is moving through Bering Strait as high winds/flooding cause damage across W. AK. Peak gusts to 81 mph. The storm surge is still the most concerning. Prepare for rising water, especially near Norton Sound.

The historic storm hitting the Western Alaska coast has brought reports of flooding in Hooper Bay, Golovin, Unalakleet, Nome and other communities in the region. More updates here: adn.com/alaska-news/we…

We issue warnings for the water & air. We have 2 warnings out to for pilots and air dispatchers, alerting them of severe turbulence. That's a giant area of low level severe turbulence forecast over western AK. Some of our newer forecasters have never issued one this big before!

Pressure wave #2 passed here last night at about 11 p.m. This is the wave travelling from the opposite direction. Still had an impressive magnitude.

Many Alaskans heard the booming sounds early Saturday morning caused by the volcano eruption near Tonga. Hearing a volcano, or any sound, so far away from its origin “is a pretty rare phenomenon,” says an Alaska Volcano Observatory scientist: on.adn.com/34KQID2

Did you hear the large "boom" between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. here in Alaska? The AVO confirms that was from the volcanic pressure wave created from the eruption almost 6,000 miles away!

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption was heard here in Alaska starting around 3:30 a.m. - 6,000 miles from the volcano! Infrasound measurements from the @alaska_avo confirm that it was indeed coincident with the volcanic pressure wave. Special thanks to Dr. David Fee.
