Nothing like watching a bunch of Ed researchers from all parts of the reform spectrum taking unjustified absolute stances on a complex policy issue on a Friday afternoon. Time to grab the popcorn.

Got some papers over here (between me and the doc students) on computer science course-taking and course offering, school staffing challenges, and maybe teacher compensation and/or hiring practices. Ping me if you might be interested in going in on related AERA sessions.

Words matter. One of the issues at hand ... did Huntington Beach Mayor Pro Tem Gracey Van Der Mark actually propose a book ban? She said no. Councilman Dan Kalmick wasn't so sure. "Making something unavailable to someone is a synonym for banning it," he said last night.

The HB Public Library does have a review process in place for books. Per acting director of community and library services Ashley Wysocki, it has been requested just 5 times in the last 5 years. One of those times was by Mayor Pro Tem Van Der Mark, in 2020, for "Gender Queer."

Thank you @RhondaMBolton for setting an example of real leadership on the @CityofHBPIO City Council.

"Do you think, for all of these years, our public libraries have been violating federal obscenity laws and the city attorney's office, or the Orange County District Atty's office, just overlooked it? And they needed to have this pointed out by the mayor pro tem in June 2023?" (3)

Your tweet doesn’t need clarification, it needs to be deleted. Under no circumstances should you condone hate toward LGBTQ+ individuals, nor use it as a metaphor for school district action.

This is SUCH dangerous rhetoric— Pitting (a) showing care for/supporting LGBTQIA+ community against (b) increasing student performance on a single state assessment & condoning violent attacks not only on schls supporting LGBTQIA+ students, but also schls w low test scores?!😳
