We are excited to see the results of our work with the Environmental Defense Fund released in an Addendum to the Smartpass White paper published recently. Check it out here. fisherysolutionscenter.edf.org/resources/smar…

Fisheries administrators: what are the big questions you currently can’t answer that better data would help with?

Trivia question: How many fish does it take to make a school?

A reminder that we are still looking for short video clips and still imagery of ETP (endangered, threatened, or protected species) within tuna fishing for our current research into the detection of these interactions by AI in EM video. Reach out if you have footage you can share!

Are you working in the location or collection of ghost gear? We have recently completed some preliminary work examining the application of AI to side scan sonar imagery and are interested to gather insights into what onboard analytics would be useful to recovery teams.

Ai.Fish has been busy with a lot of projects over the past few weeks. We are excited to complete the final analysis of our onboard AI at the Edge in tuna fishing in Costa Rica.

Wondering what the secret is to great web application design? We think it is all in the design system. Through the application of Material Design, our web application development team is able to build adaptable and high quality digital experiences.

Did you grab one of our unique USB giveaways at SAFET? Which conferences should we be bringing these to in 2024?

One challenge with object classification in fishing is that we typically see target species objects in the video for about 5 to 20 frames, while non-target species will be present for fewer than 4 frames. Designing approaches for non-target species is one of our research areas.

Next up our AI team is focusing on side scan sonar images for a ghost gear project and we are getting ready to analyze the results of our first trips running at the Edge in Costa Rica.

For the past few weeks we were getting to know everything we could about AIS data and the prediction of fishing effort at scale. We love expanding our team’s skillsets into new areas.

Our University of Hawaii capstone intern team are hard at work examining how we can improve the process of assembling datasets from our extensive annotation library. Managing millions of annotations brings about its own challenges in big data.

We presented about some of the key challenges in applying computer vision and AI to problems in commercial fishing at the Global AI in Fisheries Monitoring Summit in Hawaii.
