At least 6 unarmed people, including a woman, shot dead today.

Worrying reports of at least 3 unarmed people killed with bullets wounds, in their homes, this morning in the northern province of Nampula. Many others injured. Witnesses say security forces in armored vehicles are moving inside neighborhoods, shooting indiscriminately.

Inexcusable actions. Prof. Dr. @alculete1970 is a good man and outstanding mayor who has done exceptional work for the people of Quelimane. Mozambicans have the right to peaceful protest and freedom of assembly. #Mozambique

THREAD: Mozambique: Security forces must respect, facilitate and protect the right to protest during planned opposition demonstrations from 13 to 15 November. Mozambican authorities should not be deploying military to stop or police protests.

This would be a major development. Not entirely unsurprising: the ruling party has increasingly relied on the police/PRM > the military/FADM to do its work, including in the war against Renamo, the insurgency in Cabo Delgado and public demonstrations over the years. #Mozambique

🚨 Unprecedented Solidarity in Maputo this afternoon: Protesters Hang Onto Military Tank, Met with Empathy Instead of Force 🌍

Plain words explanation of why Mozambicans are protesting in large numbers:

Few reasons why I think Mozambicans are taking over the streets to protest: 1.Right now, different professional classes are striking in Mozambique, from doctors, teachers to judges, is almost unbelievable that Frelimo would win with 70.6%

While protests have been fairly common after Mozambican elections, these are the largest demonstrations since the disputed 1999 election results and certainly the most widespread. Mozambicans have a right to transparency and opportunity. #Mozambique

At least 18 protesters and a police officer have died during weeks of unrest across Mozambique since the October 9 election. Frelimo, the ruling party for nearly 50 years, was declared the winner, but opposition parties claim widespread electoral fraud.
