Labour’s “record-breaking” investment summit isn’t quite what it’s cracked up to be. My story in today’s @guardian: theguardian.com/business/2024/…

The millionaire tax lawyer is complaining about tax being too high for the top 5% of earners again. (Or as he puts it those on "fairly ordinary salaries".)

This chart is a scandal. Teachers, doctors and others earning fairly ordinary salaries can face marginal tax rates of more than 60%, and sometimes approaching 80%. Rachel Reeves should reform income tax. Thread:

Kemi Badenoch’s manifesto borrows research from a US climate denial group run by Trump advisors. But what relevance does a survey of Americans have to UK policy? Is Badenoch looking to replicate the US culture war over climate? My story for @DeSmog: desmog.com/2024/10/03/kem…

🔴 In opposition, Labour adopted the definition of Islamophobia proposed by the cross-party @APPGBritMuslims Now they're in government, ministers seem to be quietly backing away from the definition. @adambychawski reports for @onlinehyphen 👇 hyphenonline.com/2024/09/18/uk-…

"Utter a bad word about Islam or Muslims and Oborne will be on your tail." Hilariously revealing line in this smear piece that amounts to nothing more than 'I don't like Peter Oborne because he is not Islamophobic.' thecritic.co.uk/the-odd-world-…

Labour now going out to bat for the Tories' anti-protest laws. Remember these laws were dreamed up by oil-funded think tank Policy Exchange (h/t @adambychawski) to target climate activists and had to be steamrollered through when parliament rejected them. hyphenonline.com/2024/08/28/lab…

The NHS paid the private sector £1.4bn for extra beds after making cuts to mental health despite soaring demand. I found those private healthcare companies made £882m in profit over that same period. My research for @EveryDoctorUK in the @BigIssue bigissue.com/life/health/nh…

Reform has been dogged by its failure to vet candidates. I found more than 130 Reform candidates have also ignored fundraising rules – raising concerns that they could be failing to vet donations as well. bylinetimes.com/2024/07/01/ref…

Keir Starmer says he wants only "the highest quality candidates". Does that include Graham Stringer, a director of climate denial group? Stringer refused to tell me whether he agrees with its co-founder that net zero will "control what you eat". desmog.com/2024/06/20/lab…

God imagine what politics would be like if we didn't listen to corporate lawyers

I had a memorable meeting with one of the sponsors of the policy, where I was patronisingly told they’d “heard enough from the lawyers”.

BP bosses were secretly offered a chance to “shape” a report by the think tank Policy Exchange later cited by the government. My first story for @DeSmog desmog.com/2024/05/08/bp-…

After 10.5 years, I’ve been laid off by @openDemocracy This round of redundancy included most of the UK team. Three longstanding sections - @opendemocracyru, @_ourEconomy and @demoAbierta - were all also shut/mothballed in the last 6 months: a total of 21 journalists redundant.

I’ve been laid off by openDemocracy, along with a load of my amazing colleagues in the UK. Another bad day for good journalism in this country If anyone needs an editor, reporter, barman, ageing centre forward or hype man hit me up
